 Stage 1 and cold weather??
Got the motor to where I want it to be until it got cold out. This weekend the cold hit and I ran the setup for the first time in the cold. It was 18 degrees and the motor got of to a slowwer start than it used to when it was stock. Once it was running it was intermitantly shooting blue flames out of the muffler. Left then right side every 5 seconds or so and running rough at low idle. If I throttled up it would shoot flames and backfire. Even after it warmed up it was running rough at low idle and rough at the lower end of mid range. Also when comming of idle into gear it would stall unless I hit the throttle first and dumped some fuel.
Should I change the Jet needle or idle jet when its cold out? Just wondering if this is normal for this setup. Thanks

Re: Stage 1 and cold weather??
Talked to a guy yesterday running in below 10 degree weather with a Mikuni. Idle is rough till it warms up but he is not seeing issues like you describe. His problem is gettting it started when the temp is ~1 degrees, but he said that once it got warmed up, it was good.
Maybe others from the tundra will chime in. I have only run mine in the low 20's and have not had a problem.

When it is real cold like you discribe it will hicup through the carb. Its so cold that the fuel isnt fully atomizing till the motor gets real warm.

Re: Stage 1 and cold weather??
I leaned out the low idle mixture screw(about 1 half turn) and it did the trick. She is running much better now. Today we launched at 8 degrees. She will still stall if I dont throttle up alittle before putting it in gear after idling for a little while. I Think I need to lower the jet needle ( I have it set on the bottom notch) and get a bigger low idle jet. Its gonna have to warm up a bit before I try it. She is good for now.

Re: Stage 1 and cold weather??
yea mudd you are right, the fuel doesnt get fully atomized expecially at idle when its cold....fuel also gets denser when its cold out.
hasnt been too cold here this year but last year was a beating. I know its not the right thing but I have a rubber band on the throttle that i rigged up that keeps the motor around 1800-2000 before i put it in the water for 5-10 min. havent really messed with the carb much...except for idle adjustments.
The ultimate way to go is to convert one to fuel injection which that could be done for around 700 dollars then the computer will automatically calculate the proper ammount of air and fuel to keep the motor alive.
EFI works great have a 29 kaw. long tail thats efi, hit the key and forget about it. -20 to 90 deg.
I Believe Kolher is putting EFI on their 40hp. which is on the bigger Mudbuddy's and Go-devils. not sure if the manufacturer is going to offer that motor on their outboards.
these motors are cold blooded as it is....my snowblower is that way too.
