Shaved Heads
Looking into doin a head job on my 32 PD. How much should I deck the heads and what is the right amount of valve shim to go along with decking of Heads. Also, 3 angle or 5 angle valve job. Pros/ Cons of each. Port and polish is a no brainer.

Re: Shaved Heads
More importantly than just decking the heads is truing the cc's in the combustion chambers.. They should be within 1-2 cc's.. I've had a set of heads decked .070 and another set down to as little as .015 just to true them up.. My personal belief is not to go over .050 but that's just my opnion..

Re: Shaved Heads
Those deep swirls are just really rough cuts. When they mill them, its probably from them taking deep passes off the head. In other words, they might have taken 3 passes. Each pass at .020 therefore leaving a rough finish.
In order to not have that happen they just have to have the last pass only removing .005 for a nice surface finish.

Re: Shaved Heads
Hey DB8 are those some EVT heads? I see the engraving. If so that is some pretty crappy quality coming out of their shop. I agree as well that too much was cut on the last pass.

Re: Shaved Heads
Those were heads that were done when we first got started. Since then we have new equipment for decking the heads. All of the heads that were done by us were decked on a slight angle to try and help increase the flow. So you will not find a set that are truley flat.

Re: Shaved Heads
The "deep" groove finish is from the feed speed too fast, and if not using a carbide insert, the radius of the tool cutting point is too sharp. Also note the method of machining was with a lathe due to the cylindral concentric pattern.
The other pictures that illustrates a nice finish, was cut in a mill and the cutting head more than likely a multi tool, due to the "cross hatching" finish.
Note this is my opinion based on the pictures, and being a millwright for 27 years, but by no means a FE!

Re: Shaved Heads
No JD we use a wire wheel for that. Rods and pistons are exact however the cylinders and cranks are not. Carry on.
