 Briggs Timing Key
Where is the best place to get a advanced timing key for a 20hp Briggs? eccarburetors sells them but they want more for shipping then they do the part. I had one from CartsPlus but sheared that one right after installing it so have been back to the stock timing key, and I don;t see them on CartsPlus website anymore.

 Re: Briggs Timing Key
That's the problem, they're cheap but cost more to ship. You don't technically need it, just turn the flywheel and bolt it back down. You could go as far as painting a line and using a timing light but you can wing it also. If you sheared the first one, your flywheel wasn't tight enough.

 Re: Briggs Timing Key
Will nailed it. Your key is simply for indexing. It's not designed to hold the flywheel in place.

 Re: Briggs Timing Key
lapping compound is the same as valve grinding compound correct? I just watched a video on how to lap the crankshaft and flywheel. Someone on here had mentioned that I should have done that when I said I found my advanced timing key I had just installed sheared......live and learn, I had no idea.
I just ordered a new advanced timing key from ECCarb today, don't want to mess with a timing light or trying to index myself without a key. I am going to do the lapping this time. Good project over the winder for me. Will run the stock key the rest of the season here.
Thanks guys!

 Re: Briggs Timing Key
As noted above, if you sheared the key, it was because the flywheel wasn't torqued properly. The key is just for alignment, it doesn't hold the flywheel in place.

 Re: Briggs Timing Key
Use an impact. Or hammer wrench!
