Post Which cam is best?
Got another case gasket leak and may change cams on my MB 7000. I have a big 20 ft boat and get plenty of bottom end but I would like to get all the top speed possible. I assume I have a BPS cam since mine is a 2012 model. Which cam would be better or best for that?

Dual cams would be best.

The .305 cam seems to be all the rage right now.

I have a .305 Delta Cam in my motor currently and like it. Good all around cam.

I have also seen some really "big cams" recently, but don't know enough about it to comment.

There is no BEST cam. You have to decide how you want to use your engine then use a cam that fits those needs.

I guess I want more top end than anything. I have a lot of low end torque with this motor and the hammer prop.

What rpms are you currently running. What exhaust are you running? Leakdown test would be awsome to know but prob not avail. Is the bottom of your boat perfect? Keep in mind you have very tall gearing combined with a hammer on a big rig. It needs alot of bottom end. With some more info on your rig we can give you better direction.

The bottom is 3/16th and it actually is perfect. I have a 38/48 gear setup right now and have tried a 38/46 with little change. I can turn the hammer with my boat full of decoys and me with the blind on it at 4900 to 5000 this time of year. I can bury the prop and lower my rpms with little speed change. I talked to Chad at Prodigy and he recommends I go to the Delta 310. I assume I have the standard BPS cam grind in mine now. I just don't want to waste any money on a cam that's not going to help me. I don't have a leak down test but Calen worked my heads last year so I am hoping they are good. Running a double barreled MM exhaust with no baffles. My boat is a 2054 with a 3/16th bottom, custom rig. Has a lot of bowlift because of the rake in it. It is square chine so it don't turn for shit but runs good. It will run 32 with hammer and 33 with 3 blade. Loading it heavy kills the speeds on the 3 blade unless u shift the weight to the back, with the hammer loading it has very little affect on it.

Thats a good running setup already. Your bps cam is around 240deg at .050 if i remember correctly. Going to a 310 should add roughly 8deg of duration. " ive never speced a 310 delta" this would raise your rpm sweet spot. But damn you want to cruise at over 5k :D

Also If you are running roller rockers I believe the .315 is too much lift and will cause interference with the valve guide. So Scratch that..if your running rollers rockers.

I am running roller rockers. Chad said everyone running the 310 cams had to go to a 50 gear. I assume to get the rpms down. I almost feel like u could fix that with some prop pitch. S what do y'all think? Call Nick or Dyno or get a Delta?

Gearing-you fix once
Prop pitch-you have to fix every time you replace the prop, and even then can be a crap shoot

Too much prop is like taller gearing. It puts more strain on the engine to turn the same amount of RPM's. I'm a fan of a total package that allows you to run your target RPM. It souls like you want to be in the 5k neighborhood, so for a speed prop Delta offers a Merc 3 blade with some mods to the prop that help them run well with modified engines.

Post Re: Which cam is best?
I have a 3 blade merc. It runs great til u load the boat. Then u have to put all the weight to the rear of the boat or it plows terribly. I would like to run in the 4600 to 4700 range and be able to cruise at a decent speed at around 4100 or 4200 rpms. I don't mind changing gears to get the right setup. I feel like I need to get the best available cam and then see if I need to regear. Is this the correct thinking?

Some were asking abt compression test numbers.. I jus checked it, 225 and 215. Best I recall that's same as the last time I checked it. When Calen worked my heads I asked for a mild decking job of .020.
