New 37 efi or mod my current motor
I have a 2012 35hp GT and I called Delta to see about doing some mods. Heads, cam, carb, exhaust, and a worked prop for almost 5k. The new 37s are just under 9k so I am finding it hard to justify spending 5 grand on mods when I could sell my motor and spend a little more to get a brand new 37. What do yall think?

What is lacking in your current motor and what are you looking to get out of those $5,000 mods? If it's to go 3mph faster, then don't do anything and put that $5K into a mutual fund.
For me, I'd rather have the EFI not for any performance gains (if there are any), but for better starting in cold weather (but I see you're in LA, so probably not an issue).

I'm not looking for speed. If I put a couple buddies and all of our gear I can barely get on step.

Re: New 37 efi or mod my current motor
Those mods provide significantly more power than a 37. So yeah, you could get a 37 and new frame for a bit more. If you've been mostly happy with yours for 5 years, then a 37 would probably make you happy. If you've always wanted more power, you're just going to want to mod that 37, and you'll spend alot more. Think about it like this. You upgrade to a new 37 for 9500 or whatever. Then you have a cast lower unit, a Briggs efi, and 37 hp and a warranty. Or you spend 5k, keep the lower unit you have, know it runs fine, and don't have that briggs efi, and you'll push 50+ hp. You're the one that has to spend or not spend your money. Decide what you really want out of the money spent, and go from there.

Interesting. What size boat? Ever had a valve job done? You might not need all those mods to correct a planing issue. Sometimes these motors just need some freshening up to make them run better. A new prop, valve job, and gutted or aftermarket exhaust, and they wake up some.

I'm thinking there are cheaper options for mods. IM heads, mikuni carb and gutted stock exhaust would really be all you need. I can't imagine the going rate for that is much over 2k. Easy to do yourself as well.

Im running an 18x54 Uncle J boat. I know I need a new prop and havent had the heads looked at in about a year so I may need a valve job.

Re: New 37 efi or mod my current motor
Heads, cam, carb, exhaust, prop, and labor adds up FAST. I like to tell people if you want to start out the game slow, I recommend Heads, Cam, and Exhaust first. It will be a lot stronger motor than before along with the stock governor and carb. 2012 is more than likely a 4350 limited motor so you need High rev coils to get full potential of the motor. If you decide to want more, then you can add a Carb to get some more throttle response and extra RPM on top.

Re: New 37 efi or mod my current motor
I am running a Uncle J 19x54 skiff with a 2011 35 GTR with the BPS "kit" (mikuni, heads, BPS Q) 4 adults, 2 dogs, 2 25 qt coolers, Hammer Prop- 25-28 mph @ 3500 deep water not even at WFO. I would think that you like the mod over new for the cost. BPS Kit is around $1960, add Big Blade or Hammer lees than 300.00 more or get your prop reworked $150? Then drive it like you stole it. BTW its not hard to install the kit yourself even comes with semi easy to follow instructions. And they will give you help if you call them with issues.

What about just putting a 37 on your current frame?
