Motor upgrade help: New GD 40 FNR vs modded 35 GDSD
Expecting my 20' WC custom to be ready in the next 60 days or so. Currently I got a 2016 Go Devil SD with 89 hrs on it. All bone stock. When I get the boat I'll run it under the motor stock to test performance and speeds, even if that goes good I'll still be looking into 1 of 2 things for more hp. I've planned to just keep my Go Devil and build it out for more hp, the mods will be fun. But after looking into the new Go Devil FNR frame I've had second thoughts, for about $1500 more than what I've got budgeted to go into my current motor I could sell it and buy a new FNR Go Devil. The mechanics behind the instant reverse and all on the new go devil FNR give me hard on.
Pros/Cons I've been able to narrow down b/w the two:
- Current motor: balanced GD direct drive. I've read on here because they're balanced they're harder to control and keep trim right w/ mods.
- I'm in UT, new 40 EFI block will be way more altitude friendly.
- Warranty on the new 40 block
- The new FNR models are 65 lbs heavier
- The new GD FNR has the hex shaft; e.g. more aftermarket prop options
- Overall could probably get more hp modding the 35
- & the obvious one: reverse vs no reverse (I've never had a MM with reverse so for me this isn't a huge deal)
I've been saving money/piecing together this whole rig in my mind for almost a year now... So do I save another $1500 and make the swap for the new 40 FNR or do I just mod the 35 GD motor I have? I was set on just modding my 35 until I started reading they fight back more with mods cuz there balanced. If anybody out there who's done it w/ the GD has any input I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
