I'm in the process of buying all the stuff to do mods for the first time. Doing heads/cam/exhuast for now and plan to do the mikuni later on.
People keep telling me I need to shim the springs bc I have a Non-CDI motor.
Here's my question,
I thought it was as simple as changing the coils to get my rev limiter to 4700,
But apparently the flywheel must also be changed?
Ive also read about a rev limiter box on the non CDI motors but after some digging I can't find much information on them.
So with mods and say I keep the motor at the 4350 rev limit why would I need 4700 springs or shims?
Also what's the best and cheapest way to get past the 4350 limit on the non CDI motors? (Not opposed to using my hand as the rev limiter if it can all just be removed)

On a non-cdi, there is no rev limiter, just a mechanical governor which is easily bypassed. You do not need to change coils or flywheels.

You should either shim or swap springs if you plan to run over 4300 rpm's. If you are going to continue to run the stock carb, you can just turn the governor up to allow you to reach your new rpm range. If swapping to the mikuni, you will need to bypass it, or remove it completely while you're doing the cam swap. I would advise you leave it in if you're continuing with the stock carb. You may need a stiffer spring if you turn need to turn up over 46-4700 but that won't be an issue. I likely have one somewhere you can have, if not a zip tie will accomplish the same goal. If you do go with the mikuni, i'd remove the governor all together, but you can just bypass it if you do it later down the road. You can add an electronic rev limiter at that point if you wish.

Well after you get done asking your questions I'll be asking the same thing .... Except for a CDI motor lol... I get confused on the springs / shimming / coils topic ...

What year is your motor Flint? With all the confusion, best to make sure what you have exactly...

CDI was introduced in approx. 2010 as a Marine motor.
2010-2012 ISH were 20/50 amp charging systems with CDI ignition coils they had 4350 ish RPM rev limited coils and a mechanical governor.
2012 ish+ These motors started coming with 4750 RPM limited coils and they also has a stiffer "pink" painted valve springs to accommodate the faster revs with more spring pressure to keep valves from floating.

So anytime the heads come off for mods I suggest shimming the springs or replacing them with ones with more spring pressure .
Early CDI's are limited to 4350, Can swap to High rev coils for a couple hundred bucks and under $100 for springs.
Later models have all the needs to spin safely to 4750 without valve float.

I think it's good to have a thread like this just to clear shit up with some facts. Bc it was tough to decipher what I was reading last night and obviously I came away with incorrect knowledge

Im not sure what you were reading or whether or not it was wrong or just confusing. Theres been a lot of threads about cdi's, non-cdi's, converting to run old style coils on new style flywheels, converting to run cdi coils on old style flywheels, running different charging systems, etc. i don't recall a lot of misinformation, just a lot of stuff that didn't really apply to what you're doing.

Put it on the limiter out of water.

I recently bought a 2013 MB 35. It's stock. I took the carb off to clean it. Reinstalled carb and installed a tach.
The idle is very high. Like 1500, and the out of water max rpm is 3850 and motor appears to be hitting the limiter.

I tried adjusting the governor spring but only got to 3900 and idle was up to 1700.

I'm tracking that I probably need a new spring but I can't figure out the apparent hitting of the Rev limiter? Also there is no pressure on idle spring and the stop doesn't even rest on the idle set screw?

Any help is appreciated fellas, thanks in advance.

You can do it with the spring that's on it by zip tying a few of the coils together

Is there any way to tell if the electric rev limiter is going bad prior to it shitting up your coils? I am running commando right this second but I would like a box for a holy shit moment. Even if it shits the coils one day it would be better than slinging a rod.

Going to try zip tie. Anyone got a line on a good place to get higher rev goverrnor spring?
