i got a bad spark plug wire. been having an issue with my tach reading false rpms and the motor backfiring and not being able to run with the prop in the water. ruled out any fuel issues and noticed today i have a bad spark plug wire. you can see the spark kicking off the wire to the metal bracket on my motor. anyone ever replaced one before? i need to know if there is a particular wire i need to get and also how to get to the distributor cap. i tried to get the front panel off the motor today, but it wouldnt budge after i took all the bolts off that look to hold it in place. trying to get it running before tomorrow afternoon. thanks for the help...

you have to pull the front plastic cowling... and it is not just a wire... you will have to replace the whole coil.....

distributor cap... hahahaha.... definately not used to dealing with air cooled lawn mower engines are ya

Spark plug wire is connected to the coil (its one unit) so you can't just replace the wire.

If you have a break in the insulation causing it to arc, try adding insulation (take the spark plug cap off and add some heat shrink or other).

If you are replacing the coil, you have to be wary of the age of the motor- older motors (before 06) have a different coil so you would replace the pair.

Getting the cowling off there are the 4 10mm bolts on the debris cage, 4 13mm caps those bolt into, the 3 torx screws on the debris screen, and the two bolts on each top/side that hold the fuel and wiring harness and screw into the intake. Then you pull the cowling off

def my first mud motor...no one told me i had to go to mechanic school before i bought this gd thing. anyhow...i put electrical tape around the wire where it is arching. that stopped it. but my mototr is only running at 3900 rpms out of the water. would this have anything to do with the sh!tty wire, or is this bc of something else entirely?

Your rpm's are low. Turn the governor adjustment screw clockwise till your out of water rpm's are around 4200.

got the wire taped up with electrical tape to cover me for the weekend, and adjusted the gov screw. thanks for yalls help! kyle said he would help me get it truly fixed monday with B&S.
