 Surface Drives and Large Boats...
hello, I am a new member of mmt and i think this site is great i really appreciate all the past info. My problem is that i have a 35hp vanny bone stock on a mud buddy chassis which is bolted to a 1965 roughneck. Motor runs great. I am a big guy and all my friends are too we average around 300-350 ea. The concern is that the stock 35 wont get us on plane at all with 4 guys, gear and sometimes a fourwheeler. I see that alot of people modify their vanguards do create more hp. well i have been down that road bracket raced a 10sec. street car and nothing is more reliable than stock. the more radical the more breaks. I am looking into something more than a lawn mower engine i.e. a geo metro 3 cyl 1.0L engine that turns 5500 rpm all day long 60hp and weighs less than two outboards on back. Would this be half way a good idea with a little bit of time, sweat. Because I need somthing that is extremely reliable that will push ice/ 4 fat guys and act like it wants to plane out. Also, i am not loaded to purchase 2 outboards for the boat. Another question...which horizontal outdrive will hold up to 60 hp or will that have to be built to that engine. oh and fyi we hunt in about 6in. of water but getting there is 6ft. what do you guys think?

Oh, and I would like to add to the top post that I respect what the engine builders do to get the huge hp out of these screaming machines. but we all have had things break.

I took along time and looked at all options before making a mud motor purchase there all all kinds of builds outthere. you got me by 100 lbs but with three guys two dogs and 7 doz decoys blind fuel etc etc that 35 mb slightly modded motor heads and exhaust will plane out and achieve 24mph but I have heard about that geo motor , volkwagon 1600,and rotary motors etc it seems like it would work but to what the other members are saying twins would probably be the best option with all that weight. I have a old timer buddy with a 2062 xx prodrive with twin 36's and it is reliable and bone ass stock..or you just do what i do and tell the free loaders to pull out thier wallet and buy thier own damn boat and you wont have to worry about all that weight

Re: Surface Drives and Large Boats...
is an inboard mudboat an option? There are plenty of people that put 60+hp subaru motors or even 120hp mercruzer engines in em.

Re: Surface Drives and Large Boats...
The loads you are describing are doable in 6 inches with a normal 1860 or 2060 tunnel hull - 90 hp - jack plate.... Or and this ain't no econo-model... http://blizzarddesigns.com/mudboat/mudboat.html

Re: Surface Drives and Large Boats...
if you REALLY need a mud motor with that load you should do duals, otherwise the 90hp out board with a jack plate would be good. if your runnin hard bottom what about a jet drive?
otherwise mod that sucker and take good care of it, my moded motor is still runnin great but i watch the temp and take excellent care of it, good luck.

Re: Surface Drives and Large Boats...
Good choice i recently put twins on my 2054 rig. The hull weighs in at about 650 bone dry. I have 3 bat, trolling motor, 120 qt ice cheast loaded with about 70 lb fish and 20 lb ice, wife (120) me (225) 2 kids (75) run box (50) 20 gal gass (150) gear (100) and i can run 26 all day. can run 20 at 3300 rpm and gets on step very EZ.
I can tell you that my old stage 1 did have more getup, and more top end, but i can rest assured that if i have my family with me we can get back to the ramp.
let us know how it goes and if you want a 2054 with duals let me know.....i need a biger boat for fishing with the kids.
