Coming back from a teal trip yesterday and the cranking battery on my new (17 hrs) 36 PD started rolling smoke under my feet. Shut the motor down and waited about 20 minutes for the smoke to clear up. The entire time I could here the battery boiling inside the box. After getting towed back to the launch got a voltage meter and a new battery and started testing the electronics. At neutral the motor was putting out 14 volts. When I got to 1100 rpms I was at 22 volts and shut down before hurting the new battery. Have any of you had issues with this? Talked to KP and he said it was the first he had heard of this. |

No, it should be 12v at idle and go up around 14v when you reach 2200rpm or so. |

Sounds like your VR is fried- normally it would not output anything when it goes. If its under warranty take it to a Briggs shop and have them test it and replace. Those things aren't cheap. |

No idea what it would have cost. KP swapped out VR no questions asked. |

Had the same issue with mine opening weekend in saline lake. It never hurt battery but melted the filament in two spot light bulbs. When I got back to the house and checked voltage, it was 13-14V at idle and 16-18V at 1000 to 3000 rpm. I called KP at ProDrive and told him what it was doing. The first thing he said was VR is bad and they could replace under warranty. Trying to head in this friday to have it changed. 10.30 hours on the rig (18x48 with 36 and manual reverse). Other than this issue and being 100 miles from ProDrive I am very satisfied with the rig. How long did it take him to swap it out?? I am going to try and wait on it when I go. |

Its about a 5 minute swap. I had to change mine a a couple hundred hours or so. My was frying gel cell Blue Top Optimas. Was putting out around 28 volts at 4200 if I remember right. |

I wanted him to see it and take care of it because the motor only had 10.33 hrs on it. didnt want to chance voiding any kind of warranty in the future. he replaced the bulb that burnt out as well. my battery will be fine i think because i didnt run it long with the issue. its fixed now and running 12.5 volts at most from idle to 3600 rpm. Props to KP at prodrive for taking care of issue no problem!! Great service!! |
