Ok, newbie with the gtr. Brand new rig from gator tail. the motor has 6 hrs on it now. is the motor will not stay running after i get it off the trailer. it cranks up fine, but it kills whenever i put it in foward, it acts likes its starving for fuel. fuel filter has little less than half full of gas. after it warms up it runs like a top all day. I've run go devil surface drives and never experienced this. so need some help, i havent called hoyt or kyle, wanted to see if anyone had some advice. boat performs great and i love the motor when im not not tryin to crank it in the mornin!

27.8 - shallow water - two guys, and dog
27.2 - deep water - two guys and fishing gear
seems like 3690 is the best rpm

pretty buch every briggs motor iv owned has had a problem staying running while they were cold. I usually leave the choke on til they warm up and have no problems killing after that.

Bump up your idle rpm's a tad bit.

let it warm up for several minutes before you put it in gear. I usually start while its still on the trailer...while i get the boat ready.

Fuel filter half full is normal.

If it wants to bog down when you put it in gear, try giving the governed idle spring a little more tension. In the water, use some needle nose and a glove (you are by the muffler) and bend the tab slightly toward the muffler. This sets the low point for idle linkage when it gets an instantaneous load (like putting it in gear).

Thanks to yall for the responses! the motor idles fine. Ive had a 35 go devil surface drive, and i would start it up and let it run while i'm unstrapping and gettin waders on and stuff. i'm doin the same with this one. the boat has been out three times and has done everytime. it idles at 900 rpm and idles great. it like when it gets a load on the prop it dies. it's like it's out of fuel or air in the line. and after bout 10 min of that shit it runs great all day. guess i'm gonna check the govenor spring.

is it just when you put it in gear or does it die if you rev it up in neutral too?
what kinda fuel tank/line setup you got?

900 rpm is too low! Turn it up to about 1150.

La Mudder, I can rev it up two maybe three times then it dies. The boat is just like it came from gator tail. 9 gallon tank with hose goin to a fuel filter to the carb. I thought 900 was low also but it idles at 900 and goes in gear the whole rest of the day with no problems. I didn't know if it had to be trimmed up at a certain position. Or maybe It needs to warm up alot longer.

Trim all the way up before you engage into forward. After you brake in your motor you shouldnt have to worry about it as much.

Also, make sure your idle RPMS are 1250-1300.

make sure gas vent is open.
