Post Water/Fuel separator questions
I have found a SUBSTANTIAL amount of water in my gas lately and I think I need to add a water/fuel separator to my setup. My questions are, where do you mount the damn thing? I also relocated my fuel tank to the front of my boat and put a electric fuel pump along with a fuel regulator. Do I just put it where my inline filter currently is? (near the motor) Also, running an electric fuel pump, do I need to worry about damaging the separator with the pressure the pump is running? thanks guys

Easiest place to mount it is on the transom right before the motor. Electric fuel pump won't hurt anything. Definitely a must though if running ethanol fuel in marine environments.

I also have my tank and electric fuel pump located up front on my boat with a fuel water separator bolted on to the transom right before the engine. Don't worry about the fuel pressure damaging anything.

Like the other guys have said, an electric pump should not damage the separator. Too much pressure can damage the carb though...

Can you get by without the pump if running the separator?

You should be able to. Just make sure all your connections are solid. Mine ran fine without an e-pump.

For the water/fuel separator Racor is the best, but you pay for it. You'll generally pay about three times as much for a replacement filter cartridge as for a standard can style fuel/water separator.

Yes, a fuel/water separator is a must. Racor is the best. Look in the engine room of a $3,000,000 sportfishing boat and you will find Racors.

The 110A is a nice filter that has a design that lends it to exposed installations. It is a little more hassle to change out filters, since you must unscrew the bowl and remove the element, instead of removing and discarding the whole lower canister.

If I was mounting a new one for a mud motor I would go with the 120AT. It is a much smaller unit than the full size Racors, but will still filter plenty of fuel for a mud motor(15 gph). My boat already had holes drilled for a full size filter head. I just put a new Mercury filter head on and use the S3213 filters.

I had the same choice to make on a fuel water separator when I received my new boat a few weeks ago. Like others have said, Racor is the best but you have to determine if it's worth it. I had the small 110 Racor unit on my other boat and almost bought it again. It's very nice, small, and 10 micron filtration but was it worth the $90 to put on a mud motor? In my opinion no. I instead went with a $25 mercury quicksilver standard unit that is compatible with a new canister filter Racor came out with that offers the same 10 micron filtration without the bowl. Once I change the filter that came with my unit next year I will upgrade to a Racor and at $9, it's a good deal that offers superior filtration.

This is the link to the Racor filter that is compatible with most of the mounts you can buy. It's even compatible with one I've seen in Wal Mart for $27 or so.
