Having problems with PD. 2008 model PD 27hp Kohler. Starts fine and runs well for a bit and then motor dies while running wide open. No sputter from engine or anything like that. Kinda like it just locks up. Fuel tank is vented and filters are clean. Motor starts back up fine and as soon as it is put back in gear it dies. We have even tried reving it up and poping it into gear. That works sometimes. I think it may be a clutch issue. Any other ideas?

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Don't think it is your clutch.

If your tank is vented properly and all your filters are clean/up to date, I would check all connections and hoses. Make sure everything is tight and there are no air leaks. If you have quick connects, they go out on a regular basis so you might replace or better yet remove from lines.

all lines are tight and leak free. bulb stays hard and plenty of fuel flow to and through the paper filter. motor will idle and run well as long as you do not put it in gear. just ordered a new clutch

My PD dealer just showed me a box of carburators that mine will soon be a part of. Kohler carbs are highly sensative to corrosion that develops in the bowls from the ethanol in our fuel. I ran about 30 minutes out fo Morgan City this morning and had to idle back to the landing because my motor stalled. Started it back up just fine, but when I put it into gear, it would only idle. Nothing under load would keep it alive, so I told my boy to go lie down in the pirogue, it's a long ride back to MC from out here. We idled an hour and half back to Berwick and I brought the PD straight to the dealer. We did several prelim tests and when he pulled the fuel hose off the pump, it was under pressure. "YEP" he said after the gasoline sprayed all over. This tells me that there's blockage in the carb. Gonna have to pull it off and worst case, replace the whole carb. That's when he said to come see these and I'll show you what's probably wrong with yours. Small hole at the bottom of the bowl wouldn't even let air through it. Did the PD dealer say it was your clutch? Mine is a 2008 27 Kohler.

I had the same problem with my 25 kohler. I pulled the carb down three time before I realized it was the solenoid that was not opening all the way. All i did was pulled it out polished it up cleaned out the hole it was in just in case they had something in there. Put it back together and it was fine. I would check all the small thing before I buy a new carb. Unless you just want a new one.
