Post Problems with modded 23 gtr
My tach was out, I though I was hitting the rev limiter with my new mikuni,I got a new tach and I'm getting 3300 rpm with two and load at 1/2 throttle. Engine dies if pulled past 1/2 throttle, slow fast it doesn't matter. This is only under load though. I have the needle set at middle slot and the idle properly adjusted. Engine puffs black smoke on throttle pull. Also, engine rpms slow down if the plug on the starter side is pulled out while running. If I leave starter side in and pull the non starter side. Rpms stay constant. I'm at my wits end about this. I connected the rev limiter black and green to the bolts in the instructions and the red rev limiter wire to the white accessory wire. I want to be able to pull full throttle and see what this baby can really do after the mods. I think it's a bad coil. But how am I getting 3300 rpm under load then?? Any suggestions will be helpful

Mikuni and crossover, I dunno if that constitutes "modded" but I figured it did. It's running 3400-3500 unloaded at around 20 and two guys and gear at 3300 at 17-18 I guess, that's at 1/2 throttle which is as far as I can pull the throttle before it dies

Try diconnecting the rev limiter. Its not a bad coil, your engine is firing properly.

I tried disconnecting it, still killed at over 1/2 throttle

I run about 25mph 3300rpms w 6 gal fuel and me at 250lbs. With me, dog, son (215), boat blind, doz decoys, two shot guns, two square bucket seats, 6 gal fuel, I'm down to 12-13 mph at about 3200 rpms. If I could get up to 20mph with that load I'd be thrilled.

Update: tuned the carb a little more, idle screw in some, needle clip set to middle. Running 3600-3750 rpm in deep water (touched 3800 once) with just me (270) and nothing else. Starts fine, runs fine, on step quickly, idles great and hits about 20-21 mph. Pulled plugs after run, light brown and perfect. All of this was at 1/2 throttle and it was still killing off at more than that. I'm betting it's a main jet issue at this point. All signs point to the main jet being wrong now. Someone tell me if I'm wrong. I'll test it with me, one more and gear and see hw it goes. If this is half throttle I cant wait to see how it will run when I can pull WFO without killing it.
