 How to install a Cam
I have been getting calls asking for direction, so here yall go. Once you remove the case cover and remove the stock cam/lifters.Lube cam and new lifters with assembly grease before installing (DO NOT REUSE THE OLD LIFTERS)Install lifters before camInstall the cam by aligning the timing mark on the cam with the mark on the crank shaft gearIf you have a carb kit now would be a good time to eliminate the governor gear and cut the governor shaft like soBreak in cam @2500rpm for 20min Torque case bolts to 185in/lbs Its that easy I will post up more detail later, I just wanted to get this up tonight

Re: How to install a Cam
Thanks fellas. I saw video of someone installing an auto engine cam yesterday. They greased the lobs as here, but where the shaft floats on bearings they just put oil and not grease.
Addendum: they also recommended you change oil and filter after breaking in cam.

Re: How to install a Cam
Cam looks good. Hoyt said the lobs were higher and more rounded than stock so valves will open longer. He said I should compliment the cam with a higher flow exhaust.
He kindly gave me a tour of the shop. They are damn busy!!! But he still has time to play with mods. His 35 mods are dyno rating 45hp. I should see significant improvement in load capability. Can't wait to install and test.

How does one secure the crankshaft so it does not move so the bolt at the end of the drive system can be unscrewed?

Strap Wench Flywheel Holder
Use this tool any time you need to keep the flywheel from turning.
Works on all Briggs & Stratton engines.
Part #: 19433
Remember to always use the right tool to do the job safely.

Re: How to install a Cam
I have never had to steady the flywheel to install a cam (working all in the back vs. having to remove the cowling on the front). Is that the only way to get the clutch off on a GT?

Re: How to install a Cam
Ok, I got the crankcase open and pulled the old cam. Sometimes I think these engines are put together with little thought to disassembly and repair. I'm pretty sure the only way to do this job is to take the motor off the frame and set it forward over the frame. I also learned that a puller is your best friend. I used it to pull everything off the shaft. I even used it to pry back the crankcase cover by using the crankcase bolts inserted in two auxillary hole.
But now I have a big question. My new performance cam does not have any of ghe parts that look like to me to be some sort of centrifical device which interacts with a vertical rod that attached to the throttle spring. Is this a centrifical rev limiter of some sort? If so, and since my new cam has none of these parts, that my new cam in intended to be installed without these parts and that once installed I'll have to watch my rpms until I can install an electronic limiter? I'm in the middle of the install right niw and will be working into the night if I can get some guidance on this. Thanks.
Addendum: One has to take the cowling off to secure the crankshaft. And, cover the hole at the top of the drive assembly so nothing falls in there. I learned the hard way. I dropped a couple of small rubber vice pads and a zip tie down there. Don't think anty harm, you don't want to drop a socket or a screw driver down there.

Re: How to install a Cam
I'm stumped on this cam issue. The stock cam has mechanisms on the front and back of th gear that the performance cam does not. What's up with dat?

Re: How to install a Cam
Those photos at the top of this thread show a cut governor shaft, so all those pieces on the stock cam engaged that shaft. The notes say "if you have carbaurator kit it's a good time to cut this shaft", or something simlar. Well, I'm keeping stock carb and since the new cam does not have the parts to engage the governor shaft, I'll have no governor anyway. My thought is to not cut the shaft and just leave it and the lever which interacts withe the stock cam pieces that i guess is a centrifugal switch. But will the stock carb malfunction without the governor?

Re: How to install a Cam
23 has a different governor than 35 pictured above. Governor is on the cam shaft gear. You would know this if you had looked at the IPL or gotten a repair manual.
Now you have decisions to make if you are going to run the stock carb. Get rid of your governor and rig something for your throttle operation and install an electronic rev limiter or put on a carb kit.

that stuff's just there for looks, you dont need that. id just put a rev limiter on it bud, that way if you decide to go with a carb, itll already be there.

dude your video is hilarious! im not sure about those cams, but some engines have a compression release built in to the cam, the inside peice may be what that is for, but someone with more knowledge can confirm this/shoot it down.

Re: How to install a Cam
Cut the govener shaft, install new cam, install a rev limiter. PERIOD. If you are gonna stick with the stock carb then you will need to rig up a throttle cable, or you could buy a mikuni kit. Thats it, plain and simple, stop worry about not having all that shit on your new cam, its not going to materialize out of nowhere and all the sudden you can use your govener, its not going to happen. CUT THE GOVENER SHAFT AND PUT THE NEW FUKING CAM IN AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT.
