just got a new (to me) boat with a LT 24hp honda. its my first mud motor so i am not too familiar with them. it runs good at low throttle but when i try to open it up it will rev up and down and sometimes back fires. i took it out again today and it did all of that and it would also die unless i had the choke pulled. with the choke pulled it would run fine.

any help is greatly appreciated and it'd be nice to make a few contacts that have the same motor for future reference

Do you have water in your gas?

The surgin sounds like it may not be gettin steady fuel, what kind of fuel pump and how long is the hose to the tank?

My scavenger had the Honda GX670, and did the same thing when I got it. I got the carb rebuilt, and ended up adding a electric fuel pump.

There is an electronic fuel solenoid on front the carburetor that does not agree with ethanol at all. I had to take mines apart twice, emery cloth it, it had surface rust, get it smooth, put some wd4o on it and put it back. I currently us stabil marine formula in gas and it helps. This happened on my Honda 24 when ith was new maybe 20 hrs then again after it sat 2weeks. Hope this helps

thanks for the replies yall.. the motor had been setting up when i got it. i ended up getting the old gas out and did a regular maintenance tune up and added some sea foam to the tank and let that run through. the motor runs great now and my only complaint is the speeds i get on my 1756 but i expected that
