Well, picked up my new performance heads today. A question: do the new head gaskets require adhesive or sealant, or do they install dry? Do I use locktite on the head bolts? Anyone know what the numbers and symbols on the valves mean? Heres a pic; |

I=intake E=exhaust dry and torque to specs, I prefer to snug up first, then go in a cris cross pattern to tighten up. locktite on head bolts won't be a bad idea. |

I use a "copper spray a gasket" on the gaskets. Loctite on the bolts is fine. I would not use red though. Probably blue. |

Heads are bolted to cylinders. Specs posted here say torque head bolts to 340 foot lbs? My torque wrench only goes to 150? Should I just tighten the mothers as hard as I feel comfortable or what? |

Ok, YOU ASSES! Just realized the specs were in "in lbs"!!!! So y'all were just waiting for me to post the eminent catastrophe, weren't y'all? So just how many foot lbs is 340 in lbs? |

Divide 340 by 12 and you will get your answer. |

you should probably get a inch pound torque wrench before tearing something up. they cost a little more than the ft pound wrench but a lot cheaper than trying to put 340 ft pounds on them bolts. |

340 in lbs = 28.333 ft lbs. My head bolts are just right they ain't ever coming off again without striping bolt heads. No locktite and no antiseize. I don't know who to trust anymore except a few. So if your intent is evil payback will be a sob for you. |

So they "never seize" and they are way easier to break loose if you need to take it apart for whatever reason. |

Early this morning I installed intakes, skirting, throttle assembly, cowling, fuel pump, electrical grounds. Thank god for the iphone camera and the photos I took of the dis-assembly!!! Tonight I'll install the flywheel guard and pull rope. Need some help: Since the governor is no longer in the picture I'm gonna have to rig up a spring mechanism to bypass it to bring back the throttle to idle. Anyone care to conjure up a solution. I'm just not seeing how I'm gonna use the idle arm assembly in a way to spring back the throttle because is attaches to the vertical governor rod which pivots. Maybe I could somehow jam the pivot rod so it won't move so that I can attache a spring to it to pull back the throttle. Without a visual its hard to tell what I'm asking. I'll try to post something in a minute or two for a reference. |

Go to auto parts store & pic up some misc carb springs. They will have a multi pack on their "Help" isle. Hook 1 end to the same tab that the spring is hooked to right below your thumb in the 2nd pic. Hook the other end to the vertical tab that's just above the crankcase bolt on the top right in the 1st pic. If you route it on the outside (away from the motor) of the govenor rod, it should act as a return. If not you get the idea, just relocate it until it does. |
