I'm finding that because of increased compression from head mod and performance cam, I have to bump starter twice to get enough momentum going to start engine. Is there an option for more powerful starter?

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

a bigger battery /cable size would probably do the trick

Mine usually starts on the first key always fires right up... Perhaps check your battery terminals for corrosion build up etc. As Rod said you may need larger cables start easy first

Bring your starter and have it beefed up a lil bit. Had to do that with my longtail.

Just finished charging my battery and engine starts fine, now. But definitely notice engine requires more force to turn it over than before mods. I was thinking this is because I'd increased compression from decking heads and performance cam does not have the stock cam features that allow easier starting: those ball bearings on the camshaft.

were's your batt located . have you tried doing a starter draw test on the starter. yes the engine mod you did does req. more batt draw. i have alot of guys call saying that they need a new starter and have yet to sell one. it is ussauly a weak under rated batt. i like the optima blue top dual purpose batt. when i set up a new boat i also use a second ground from batt to engine. i would check all your connections. and do a battery draw test on it. good luck

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

Once it turns it'll start first crank. A quick bump followed by full crank gives the flywheel enough momentum for the starter to do it's job. Just tried it again with full battery charge still had to bump starter one time. My battery is marine grade crank battery.

So will an electric motor shop "beef" up the stock starter enough to do the job. What will they do to it?

they will put more winding on the armature new brushes

You don't need to do anything to your starter. Upgrade your primary wires from the battery and/or replace your battery. My motor turns over just fine with the stock starter and the compression around 240 on both cylinders. I know of a few others with compression in the same neighborhood and not having any starter issues. I would bet money that your compression isn't even close to that. If we don't need a special starter, you don't either.

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

of all the engines that get dropped off for me with said problem. 80% of them are valves not set right other 20% bad battery.too small battery. bad cables. battery up front primary wire to small for the lenght that they are trying to run. i have never replaced a starter yet not saying that yours isn't bad just never seen one yet. valve setting on these motors is very critical and very unforegiving they have to be dead nuts. not close enough. search u tube they have a post on valve adjustment. good luck

As stated above.... try a bigger cable first before you spend money on the stater internals. Might be a voltage drop issue with a small cable especially if the battery is up front.

Battery in back near engine. Valves set .005 1/4" past TDC on exhaust stroke.

I have da same issue, but mine is more due to the 15 foot battery cables I have. Doesn't bother me enough to worry bout it.

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

It might bother you when you have to replace that $200 starter. By not feeding the starter the amount of voltage/current it needs, you put a lot of extra strain on it. $50 worth of wire fixes the problem and you'll probably never have a problem with the starter unless you submerge it.

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

if you are setting valves as stated in post that is your problem. you will be buying another cam very soon. i agree with cb on the cables. also it's no fun having a wiring fire. :o

Is the lead comin off the motor goin straight to the battery? If so, ya probably just need a better battery.

What battery? What size? How old?

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

compression stroke 1/4'' past tdc. thats clockwise on the flywheel. i use a spark plug dial indicator you can use a screw driver.to measure. not .005 on the valves but a tight .008-.010 if you used roller rockers. do the other cylinder same way. crank engine over with the starter about 10-15 complete rev.recheck your work. i hope you used cam break in lube on the lobes during assembly. if the motor still kicks back. replace the battery with a blue top optima. spend the money now not later. buy your food at wally world not your battery. if u want send me a pm i'll call u back . i worked for briggs many a year. good luck.

save up some coin and buy the roller rocker push rod kit. i also make some pretty cool push rod guide plates.

Post subject:  Re: Heads Shaved+Cam=starter too weak

what a guide plate does is it alinges the push rod with the rocker arm and the lifter. as the rpms go up. you start to get what is called push rod deflextion. meaning the pushrod is moving all a round in the bore and on the rocker arm. these guides help to keep them in place .the guides you found help the alinement but not the deflextion. the ones we are going to market prevent the said deflextion. do a search in the mini hotrod tractor pulling curcuits. some of these guys are exp. with cylinder extensions. deeper sump pans for the longer stroke engines. i beam h beam steel rods. off set ground cranks etc etc. will this stuff work in the mud motor industry most of it not. but some can transfer over. which leads me to another area. i did a search here on cylinder heads and porting. with out a flow bench you guys need to stop trying to do port work.all you should do with out the bench is port match. find a local moto crosser and see who does his porting. there is a few hp. to be made in those mountain heads. i know i started off on this site as a smart azz and might off offended a few like camo and others. i apologize if he wasn't so big i'd give him a man hug. but i'am afraid he might bitch slap me.

I have a set on the kohler. They came with the roller rockers. Never really paid attention to them not being there when working on the briggs.
