high pitched engine noise

 high pitched engine noisewas pulling back to the dock last night and heard a real high pitched whine coming from my engine. ran the motor for a second this morning in the driveway and it is still doing it. I can't pinpoint it, but it is coming from somewhere in the top of the block or possibly the exhaust. any ideas on what it could be?
