GT Engine Dies?
Hey guys, I have a 35GT stock w/ 3hrs on it. Engine starts and idles fine but when i engage the clutch and squeeze the the throttle the motor dies. After a couple tries i can get it to go but it is a constant issue when starting up again. Any ideas what this could be?

Re: GT Engine Dies?
mine does the exact same thing. only way i could get it not to kill was idle it up to 1650 in neutral and it would idle at 1200 in gear. IV asked around and people have said dirty carb and a few other things but i think i finally traced it to the dam throttle cable. I grease mine alot and the tension screw nomatter where i set it slipps through because of the grease and goes back to low idle. so that, bad gas, and dirty carb would be where i would start.

Re: GT Engine Dies?
Initial start up in neutral engine running about 3-4 min. RPMs got to 1400 after giving it some gas with the throttle it idled down to 1200 average.

Re: GT Engine Dies?
A good friend of mine had the same thing happen to his. His was a brand new motor as well. He put the prop in water, put it in gear, hit throttle and it would die. He called GT and they said there was a batch of motors that had a compression issue. He took it to GT, and come to find out one of his motors was one of them. They gave him a new 35.

mine did the same thing. What i do now is start it let it idle for a min. then nail it. Takes off every time no more back wash with every body looking.

Re: GT Engine Dies?
You can try this- There's a little 'governed idle spring' White spring off the govenor plate. It determines how low the throttle will travel when the engine is put under instant load (like engaging the clutch). You bend the tab on the spring a little to add more tension- Its a minor adjustment in the direction of the arrow in the pic. Bring a glove so you don't burn your hand on the muffler and do it on the water so you can test it immediately.
I had to do this when I added a more agressive prop. See if it works.

Re: GT Engine Dies?
Got the motor out on the water yesterday. I was told to try the rpms around 1400 in neutral. Noticed when i engaged the clutch rpms shoots down between 850 - 950 in water. Is this normal to drop this low?

Re: GT Engine Dies?
Have you adjusted the idle mixture screws at all?
My 36 idles at 1250 out of water, 900-950 in and never had the small spring Deadbird8 mentioned.
I fine tuned each barrel using the tach as a base line and now have excellent throttle response and can idle all day without loading up.
