23 GTR

Motor has been sitting up for about 2 years.

Ran it yesterday on a small boat and just boggs down like crazy and wouldn't get on plane.

After a little while it all of a sudden cleared out and got on plane and ran good until we slowed down, then it went back to the same way as started.

When trying to clean the carb how hard is it to do with stock carb? What should be done exactly?

Any other tips to try to get the motor back to normal?

Get carb cleaner an tear the carb apart it's not rocket science. Just pay attention it's pretty simple

Try dumping some carb cleaner into it while on the motor and let it sit then run the piss out of it.

Cleaned carb, new spark plugs, new fuel line from stock fuel pump to carb, new fuel filter and it's a little better but not much.

Added an extra fuel pump (2-3.5 psi) as per GT and it seemed to help a little too but still not quite what I think it should be.

The throttle response just really sucks. Then takes forever to wind out and get boat on step with me and one other guy. (1336 with gas and battery up front)

It's better with just me but throttle response still sucks and takes a few minute to get wound out.

Then when finally get going good and slow down to idle it acts like it wants to die.

Any suggestions?

I agree ^ sounds like you need to put a different carb on there. Lol with a few mods to that motor and with it actually running right the props gonna be the only thing in the water with that little boat!

Every 23 i seen had an Efuel pump to help it out... Also... thats a Short boat for a SD. We ran Robin2's GT23 on a 1636 and that thang Scooted.....

What kinda fuel u runnin willet? U runnin 87 or 93?

It's mixed right now. My buddy put 87 in a gas can the other day when he went to fill up his truck then I thought about it yesterday and forgot to tell him to put 93. It was bout half full of 87 so I put 93 and some fuel cleaner in yesterday. It seemed to be better yesterday but still not quite what I expected.

Yea I thought about the length being an issue yesterday. Guess if I want to run this motor ill have to build a different one. Just don't want to be w/out reverse.

As far as mikuni I really thought about that but don't you need a better exhaust to really see gains from the mikuni?

Are you mashing thr throttle or rolling into it? I remember the 23 Not being too repsonsive regarless ya know. You are used to a Mikuni/36 and thats a big difference. Once you get that thing worked out, look into a longer boat and it will run.

Have tried rolling into it and just hammering down. The first few seconds (regardless of load) it sounds like it's gonna just go and then sounds weak. Like I said it's better with just me but then I can't run wide open because of bow bounce.

Guess I'll figure something out

Where are you running it at?

The low waters of Lake Palestine.

Got it in some stuff yesterday and it did good minus the fact that the trottle response sucks and I almost lost the motor in the mud a few times because I didn't bolt it through the transom yet due to constantly taking it on and off.

I've already done that. In fact when I took it apart it was cleaner then any carb I've ever seen. But I still took everything apart and cleaned it.

Might just be your air/fuel mixture screws that need to be adjusted

I thought bout the air fuel mixture screws but never messed with a stock carb. I noticed there are little black plastic things on the air fuel screws to keep you going too far one way or the other.

Anyone know if these black plastic pieces can be removed for better adjustment?
