My buddy has a 36 PD.He just went get his valves set.Came home and the boat has lost power. He sent it back and they said one was loose so they fixed it.He got it back.Rpms out of water are good. But running before the valve set he could get his boat to about 27-28running around 4000-4050 rpms. Now he cant get it above 24mph.His rpms slowly gain as he is running but no higher than 3800.Can barely get 20 mph out of it with 2 peeps and a ice chest in the boat.He is pretty bummed.Let me know what you think.

By "valves set" you mean the valve clearance? Who set them for him?

Any other work done on motor?

Any other changes/work when valves were set?

Yes the clearence and done by a PD dealer. The motor is stock. No work done other than getting the valves set.Boat ran perfect before resetting the valves.

I'd be trying to get it back to the dealer who did the work. Anything you do to try to fix it will probably void whatever warranty you may have had on the work. Basically, if you change anything they did, they are gonna blame you for the problem. Sounds to me like they did not get them set right. Not set on the right stroke or something...

Yeah, sounds like they goofed something up somewhere. I think if they're set too tight, you'll have a good hole shot, but no top end. Too loose, no hole shot, decent top end.

sure they set them correctly- 1/4" past TDC on the compression stroke?

yes its gotta be something with that.He has brought it back 2 times and its still not right. He had them reset the first time and it started acting up.Brought it back and its still doing the same thing. He may have to find a new dealer in franklin.

Is it still covered under the Briggs warranty? You said he was a PD dealer but is he also a certified Briggs mechanic?

WHen I flattened my stock cam it would run up and then then the opr RPM under load kept falling and falling.. then it got to the point the boat wouldnt plane out.. Its a valve issue, Bring it back and get it checked out. Its probably a simple fix.
