 27 kohler popping
I have noticed the last few times out at hight speeds it seems I get a pop in the carb that feels like a miss, also seems to be worse in the slop. I assume that it has something to do with the govener kicking in more fuel.
Any idea what would cause this??

 Re: 27 kohler popping
pulled the valve covers off without pulling them all the way out they don't look bent.
wouldn't that cause it to do it all the time?

 Re: 27 kohler popping
chocolate colored is what you should be seein. dark black would mean too much fuel.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
carb could be out of adjustment, runnin rich. funny to see it only on one side though. might also be a bad plug. try changing the plugs first. or cleaning the plugs good and switching sides with them and seeing if it still does it on that side. if it happens again to the other plug on that same black side then its not the plugs. could be carb or even a jet problem. process of elimination man. first start with the easy stuff like the plugs and the wires, coils. and then move on to the carb, jets, valves. someone else with more knowledge will chime in soon. good luck

 Re: 27 kohler popping
One of the cylinders usually runs a little richer. It is normal for one to be about perfect and one slightly rich.
Do a compression check and a leak down. Are you running premium fuel? If not try that also, could just be some detonation.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
Thanks guys, I also talked to KP today as well. I recently Changed my fuel line over from a standard auto rubber to marine line. I had noticed a lot of water in the line after sittin for a long time also when I pulled it was soft like jelly where it sat in the bottom where the water is. KP mention the accelerator pump may have debrie from the old line in it.
Any body know what I should toque the rockers back down to?? or is it a gap thing?

 Re: 27 kohler popping
Don't mess with them yet, but the spec is 100 in lbs, no gap.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
Checked the lift on the rockers crudely they look good, so I took the carb apart and the accelerator pump had a bunch of crap clogging up the tube. Flushed it with cleaner real good and cleand the same crap out of the bowl put it all back together. Put the flywheel back on torqued the rockers back down after checking for a bent pushrod all seems well on the trailor, the only thing I am not sure of at this point is the plugs. I am gonna clean them and regap or maybe just replace them. What should they be gapped to?

 Re: 27 kohler popping
still gonna do a compression check. and prior to this I was running cheap gas that had been sitting for atleast a month. emptied all of that out after fuel line change and put in some premium

 Re: 27 kohler popping
I know that smaller kohlers are plagued with bad key ways that can shear or partially shear and effect timing really bad so I figured WTH I might as well check it since I had the stuff to pull it.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
get a set of new plugs. but before you put them in and run the risk of fouling another set of good plugs. switch the plugs in the cylinders you have now and run it. if it still fouls the other plug in that same cylinder then you can go on to the next issue with the new set of plugs. and hopefully have it fixed.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
One of the cylinders runs a lil rich...Just the nature of the beast.
BTW, you can download the service manual for free on the kohler website. It will give you all the specs you need and some limited troubleshooting info.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
Don't have a gps but it will plane and carry what I need it to. I am a slow person by nature, I once got past by a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter. Plus I leave the house at 3 with an hour drive and I am there, setup and sleeping by the time the squatters show up

 Re: 27 kohler popping
That's holding the throttle wide open? Seems a lil low...should be 150 range, but they are within tolerance of each other.

 Re: 27 kohler popping
That's good compression and even better that both cylinders are the same! Hopefully it was just the trash in the carb causing all your heartache. Sounds like you got it fixed!
