Post engine break-in oil?
question for you guys. after your break-in on new or rebuilt motors, what color and/or other things are you looking for when you drain the oil?

Make sure there are no chunks of metal in it.

k, so i ran the motor about 5 hours or so, running at different rpms for short periods and different loads. drained the oil and it came out a real dark gray color with metal flaking in it. mostly very small flaking but a few flakes the size of a pen dot when you tap it on paper. the metal flaking i assume is normal. but it was the dark gray dirty color i am concerned about. ???

Wouldn't be concerened with the color. That's why you change it immediately after break in. There is assembly lube all over the place in there and it will get mixed in with the oil and cause it to darken. Also new rings can let a little bit of fuel pass before they get fully seated, which can furthur contaminate the oil. The metal shavings concern me a little, but I'd wait and see what DB8 or BoatDr have to say about it.

He is probably seeing a little Sparkle in the draining fluid. Fill it up and dont look back. Seems pretty typical getting the sparkle on the first oil change. Mine was like that aswell.

Or Maxxis, or Cody. Thanks fellas. I figured a lil sparkle was normal. Sounded like he had some bigger pieces in it, but you guys would know better what to look for. I've only done a couple and didn't notice much metal, but the oil was def discolored.

LOl we rebuilt a Go-kart motor back in HS and that sucker always had shavings in the oil. Maybe cause the string we had to pull the throttle open more than the gas pedal would allow LOL.

I have 10 hours on my engine and it's been full of metal also. It was built pretty "tight" so it's expected. ( I keep telling myself that anyway.)
