 Opinions on 23 hp. GDSD?
I can see that GD doesn't get much love around here but I am in the process of putting together a duck hunting rig and there is not a lot to choose from in my neck of the woods. I have found a 1638 rig powered with a 23 GDSD that seems reasonably priced. I could also just buy the motor and stick on a little longer boat.
I am really wanting input on the engine. I read somewhere here about the GDSD design not being good for running in vegetation due to its balanced design. My primary obstacle down here would be vegetation so I really need to know how they handle in it. Test drive is not an option. Any input would be appreciated!

All a GDSD is is a rubber band version of a longtail IMO.
The trim tabs on the cav plate also hang weeds.

I guess he's just another potential customer you have turned against gd. I honestly never had any issues with GD until I read all the stupid shit you post. You've even turned GD owners against GD.
Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess.

Re: Opinions on 23 hp. GDSD?
Gd don't get much love because of some peope on here. Gd makes a good motor. Not as many options as the others and that exactly why I have one. Because of the simplicity of it. Anyhow describe vegetation. You talking weeds and grass or mats so thick you can walk on them? If its the latter then another brand might serve you better. The PD is a weighted back design that will stay down and mb and gt have the power tilt/trim that will keep it down. I bet that is a sweet running boat though. My buddy has a 1638 with 23 LT and he really likes it. Post up some of the places you run and maybe someone else with experience in those places will chime in and help you out. Why no option of a test run?

Re: Opinions on 23 hp. GDSD?
I have the 23 SD and I love it, I have it on a 16x48 GD Hull and it pushes me just fine. Fair warning though, most of my running has been in brackish marsh, so it's more mud, the ocassional broken or flooded marsh and canals I run. I have fooled around a little bit in Pearl River and Salvador WMA and can tell you I never came into a situation where I thought, man I wish I had a GTR, MB, etc. because I'm struggling in this veggitation. Like Med, I bought GD because of simplicity and well because its Go-Devil. Hope this helps.

There is nothing wrong with a gdsd if that's what you want and the price/setup is right.
Med the gtr is a weighted back also, the trim doesn't keep it down it just lets you put the prop where you want it.

I see. Good to know. I didnt realize that. I saw in a recent pic the control box on the handle......that's pretty cool with the switch and all being right there.
