Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
Three blade prop for starters. After market exhaust,30hp carb and either 30 hp heads or better yet 18 hp sent to Midwest cub to be reworked for the 27

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
Yeah . The ch18, 20 or 22 heads can be reworked to fit the 27 and will increase your horsepower by roughly 2. Also I love my 3 blade on the godevil . I have less vibration , more speed and don't a problem in the mud.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
You'll notice a big gain in power and load carrying ability with just the carb and muffler addition

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
mid west super cub has them. You will need to change your intake also for that carb to work.
I would do heads before carb, but that's just me.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
Just talked to midwest cub today and julian told me that just a carb will give better responce when you give it gas but thats about it , if you want more horse's out of it you need to change the crank from a 2.64 to 3 inch crank and rods a pistons with a carb that has a ajustable jet this will give you WAY more torqe out of it , gonna go this route after duck season with my 27 but I'm gonna do it all heads, cam crank. pistons basicly all of it,just to see how it is , could sell it but like it is but it's only money right and if it not what I want then I buy a 35.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
Dude, if you are gonna spend that much money, why not get a new powerhead? You are gonna spend almost what a new powerhead would cost and still not be anywhere close to the same cc's. Keep the kohler as a spare.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
No, I'm saying ditch the small block kohler. Get a big block kohler, or briggs, or a genny. You can probably get a stage 1 genny for less than you are gonna spend on just the upgrade on the lil kohler and have a platform you can get a lot more power out of.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
Pistons and rods are almost 600 bucks, the crank is over 700 before balancing. Your gonna want a different cam which is another few hundred bucks...headwork... Your gonna have 3000 in that thing quick...
I believe the crank height is the same. You would need to verify that, but I'm pretty sure that is correct. If you have a MB, you may dig around for some info on the BPS forum. They are coming out with a line of generac motors.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
You didn't fuck up. The kohler is a good lil engine. If it is close to the right HP for your needs, you can do a few things to really help with load carrying and make it that much better. If you are gonna spend several thousand dollars on it though, I would say you are better off getting a bigger platform.
The generac is about the same weight as the kohler, but is capable of building a looot more hp and they are not very expensive. I don't know what the price points are gonna be with the BPS engines, but you can get a 33hp Genny brand new for close to a grand. Looks like BPS will have a cam, rods, pistons, carb kit, and exhaust on the market for them in the near future. From what I "hear", you are going to want to put a carb kit and exhaust on it right outta the gate, but you should be able to do that and still come out right around 2 grand. This way you have a motor with a solid 35 or so hp, looots of torque, still have room to build more power if you want it, and you get to keep your kohler as a backup engine should you ever have any trouble later on down the road.

 27 kholer godevil surface drive
I used to have a 27 Kohler motor, and have been through the whole build up process. While it is possible to build one up, it really isn't economical when you compare it to buying a 35/36. I mean, it would be one thing if you had a little 23 block and weight was a big issue, but theres really not a lot of weight difference between a Briggs 36 and a Kohler 27. So the best thing for you to do, is take that money you were going to spend on mods, sell your Kohler, and buy a 35 Briggs. Its not worth the money to try and mod it..... Especially when you consider time spent. And I promise, if you mod it, you will more than likely not get it right the first time.

If you're planning on getting a bigger boat in the future, I promise you'll be much happier getting the Briggs 35 now. It'll be cheaper in the long run, guaranteed.
......... This from a guy who has been there, done that.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
If you can spend less than a grand and be happy, I'd say go for it. The problem is you don't know if you'll be happy until you do it, and you will not get your money back on mods if you decide to sell and start over.
On the bigger boat that you are looking at, I would say you are much better off spending your money on a bigger block. Briggs, kohler, generac, pick your poison. The briggs will probably be the best "bolt on" option if you do not want to mod it right away. The kohler is an expensive motor and you may want a carb upgrade soon after the purchase. The generac is a very well built motor, and very inexpensive, but you will likely want to ditch the stock exhaust and carb set up right out of the gate. Granted, you can do this and still spend less than you would spend on a briggs.
In talking to the guys that run the genny's, they don't "turn up" like the briggs engines, even with mods (unless you get pretty extreme with it anyway) ,but they are very reliable once you get them right and they run well. You could PM Dog Walker or brlcla. They are both running genny's and seem to be really happy with them. Both of them had issues with briggs blocks...

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
I noticed that my base plate has a different set of hole that are spaced out from where my motor is mounted so I'm thinking that mudbuddy has already set this up for a different motor wonder if it's for a 35 van gaurd that would be good.

Probably the van. I THINK the genny has the same mounting as the kohler.

Re: 27 kholer godevil surface drive
It's about the same size as the kohler, just has the ability to build a lot more power. You might call BPS and see what they got going on. Do a search on here also. Few guys here have picked them up for right around 1000.

Best bet for reliable performance straight out of the box is a 35 Briggs block. No mods or parts added. Been proven way too many times.

With an exhaust and heads it will help some. Don't think it's gonna do much for ya all by itself.

If he went to a 35 from the 27 wouldn't he also need to go with a different ratio of pullies?
