What's the proper way to ajust valves on stock Briggs 35hp?
I want to ajust valves on stock 35 Briggs. Should I ajust the gap on both intake and exhaust valves with piston at the top of it's stroke or should I open exhaust valve all the way and ajust intake and then open intake all the way and ajust exhaust? Also , is the gap supposed to be set at .004 . It looks simple enough but I want to know the right way and posably get some good tips.

Try to get in touch with Calen at Calens engine service. But it is .004 and remove spark plugs and roll engine until the piston stops at tdc and then roll it till the just starts to move down.set the valves on that cylinder, and then do the other.

.004-.006, 1/4 past tdc on the compression stroke, per briggs

Re: What's the proper way to ajust valves on stock Briggs 35
This has always worked for me when setting valve lash on 4 cycle engines.
*Exhaust valve starts to open set intake *Intake valve starts to close set exhaust
Rotate the crankshaft until the exhaust valve begins to open, adjust the intake valve by loosening the adjusting nut slightly until you feel lash on the rocker arm. Now you can set the lash on the intake valve. Spin the intake rocker nut down with the correct thickness feeler gauge inserted between the valve stem and the tip of the rocker arm. Tighten the adjusting nut until there’s a slight drag when moving the feeler gauge.
To adjust the exhaust valve, rotate the crankshaft until the intake pushrod opens the intake valve all the way, then begins to close. With the correct feeler gauge, adjust the exhaust rocker nut using the same procedure as with the intake rocker above. Repeat for each cylinder.

Re: What's the proper way to ajust valves on stock Briggs 35
I have read when setting on top dead center of the compression stroke, to set the intake .004-.006 and setting exhaust to .007-.009 makes a little more power and less chance of burning a valve. Anyone ever heard of this? Also, should I use any type of thread locker on the lock nut?

Got it done. Set both valve .004 . Just past top dead center. Cranks up fast and runs perfect.
