23 GDSD Stalling Out When Idling Down?
Motor, 2011 23 GDSD with about 17 hours on it, Boat, Carolina Skiff JV-17, about 700#
I just got done test running a 23 GDSD on a Carolina Skiff JV-17 just to see how it would push it. It jumps right up and runs about 21 mph with one person and was (surprisingly) able to get three guys up on plane pretty well.
With just me in the boat it will turn about 3500 RPMs at WOT. When I drop the throttle and let it idle down it wants to stall as it gets down to about 700-800 rpms. (if I feather the throttle it will stay running) Right before it stalls it almost sounds like there is some friction in the drive train somewhere, a little bit of a squeaking sound. The engine is nearly new and the grease canister is about 3/4 full.
I am completely new to this type of motor, this is the first one I have run. Is this normal or is there something I should be checking?

I can give them a call on Monday but I am going to be out in the swamp tomorrow so thought 'd check here first. I think it is probably fairly normal and that maybe it is just idling a little too low but thought I better ask anyway.

What RPM should it idle at in-water?
Also I noticed that there is water getting into the top of the pressure lubricator, is that normal?

Think minw may be around 900....can't really remember. Just set your oow idle high enough that when you put it in the water that it will run and not try to bog down and die. The cap on your lubricator may not be on good. Just unscrew it and pull the top off and clean the grease out of it. That way you can make sure the top is on good and you'll have it clean andknow that the lid is on good. Then just shoot some grease in the shaft to refill it.

It could happen if your panels were not sealed, I would suggest un screwing the plug on the shaft then tilting the motor back and see if water comes out which it might, leave the plug out and pump all the old grease out/ if its the panels just reseal them

Re: 23 GDSD Stalling Out When Idling Down?
Like Giga said a little liquid on the top of the lubricator is not the end of the world. I was the same way as you when I first opened it up. I thought, oh man that can't be good, liquid on the top side of the lubricator. It's nothing to worry with. Just go ahead and grease up that lubricator and you should be good to go, just be sure to monitor the consumpition, that's why the manual says to watch it for 5-10 hours before filling it all the way. As far as the the foam peice on the red cap, I think thats just there for support because that spring inside the lubricator is wound up tight. You sound like I was when I first got my GD, paranoid. I even thought this thing was expelling too much grease residue.
