Update on 29 hp EFI Kohler
The water is getting hard up here so I gave up and pickled the engine for its long winter nap. The morning I did that it was 17 degrees F out and 85 % humidity. The engine started on the second revolution and idled at 900 rpm even before it was warm and didn't need me on the throttle to keep it from loading up. It just started and idled. Obviously, with EFI, carb icing is no longer an issue. It may be my imagination, but it seems quieter and smoother than the 27. I've run it about 50 hours on an 18 X 50 boat with an open rear cabin on it. As you might expect, it is a little faster than the 27 hp Kohler and not quite as fast as the 35 Briggs. I see a definite improvement in fuel economy over both those engines, but I haven't the data to verify or contest the 28 % claim. I have no idea what speeds I can run with a light load because I never run that way. A normal load on a Yukon fishing trip is food and gear for a week, 45 gallons of fuel, and two people. Downstream I average about 22 mph and upstream the average is about 16 mph. If I run without the cabin the speeds increase 2-3 mph. The 35 Briggs will beat these speeds by 2-4 mph. I've connected up the computerized diagnostic system to see what it looks like. It was pretty "gee whiz". Since nothing has gone wrong it is still redundant, but fun. One of the reasons I got this engine was to see what problems would occur with EFI vs Carb. I guess I could have saved my money since there haven't been any problems. I'll try to put enough hours on it next summer to break something. Maybe I'll put it on my 24 X 48 boat with the enclosed cabin and really put on some hours.

I have the same motor but mounted on a longtail and a 15 ft flat. Waiting for new prop at the moment but love the motor so far.

Re: Update on 29 hp EFI Kohler
Let me know if you figure out how to reprogram the ECU so it will accept a little turbo. I have a Garret GT1241 that really wants to be installed, but I can't find anyone that has ever done it on this engine and I'm nervous about reinventing the wheel. Maybe I'll just do it and see if I manage to scatter parts or have a meltdown. If I can get it working on the 29 Kohler, It shouldn't be hard to do the same to the 999 cc kohler when it is available with EFI. That combo should easily push out 55hp without excessive rpm's.

CO, Both the 18 X 50 and the 24 X 48 have cabins. I'll post them both.
