Post subject:  6.5 briggs upgrades?

i have a 6.5hp briggs intek surface drive and its my first mud motor, i was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on maintenance like how often to change the oil on it. when should i switch spark plugs and such. And i really want to turn it up a little bit to get it creating a little bit more power, is there anything that could help such as better spark plug or air filter, muffler etc with little cost involved? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can tell you anything you wanna know about that motor!

For changing the oil, there is a square headed bolt on each side of the bottom of the block, you can take it off with a cresent wrench or a 12 point 9/16 wrench/socket. I recommend doing it about every 50hrs of run time.

For spark plugs, there is really no gain in performance with them and you rarely have to change one, keep a couple OEM replacements just to eliminate part of an ignition problem if you ever have one.

Also, that's a pretty poorly designed motor... Don't fork with more performance or you'll be buying a new short block.

What kinda frame is it on?

It's on a Dixie frame. I appreciate the info on the motor that helped me out a lot.
