 Re: best motor?
If you are looking at something in the 1000 cc range forget Honda. I don't think they make it. The Briggs Vanguard 35/36 and the new Kohler 40 are what you will see the most of, with the aftermarket parts being available for the big block Briggs. Kawasaki service parts are very expensive and their motors don't seem to have the torque of the aforementioned makes.
I see you're in N Idaho. My boat is on the water in Hayden right now. If you ever want to see what a stock 36 HP Vanguard-powered Prodrive does, let me know.

 Re: best motor?
Only motors I ever owned were briggs engines. Can't say that i ever had trouble with any of them.
