CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Anyone with a Vanguard CDI experiencing any leaking at the crank case gasket yet? If so, how many hours? Did Briggs address this issue and solve it? Report in regardless of what type of motor your running...PD/GT/GD/MB. I'm curious.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
The cdi and non cdi use the exact same block, crankcase cover, and gaskets. Why does it matter if you have a Briggs Marine motor or not?

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Sorry, but there is nothing "new" about the Marine or CDI as you call it.
Briggs offers the "Marine" motor as an option for the external parts on the motor, but there is nothing new about the block at all. The marine motor has differnet coils, wiring, charging system, and muffler. Briggs still uses the exact same block for both the marine and the standard motor (which some manufacturers still sell).

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Let me clarify this again, these manufacturer's want to charge $7k- $8K for a new motor depending on how you option it. Regardless, I wanted to know if Briggs has addressed the issue-different bolts, different gasket or whatever. I know the block is the same and if they have resolved it or attempted to resolve it, the CDI motors being the latest released are the testing ground. I would have thought by now Briggs would have been able to be address it. To be honest, for the price of these motors I find it to be concerning it hasn't been addressed. Mine started leaking around 100 hours, and mine is a 2006 and one of the first 50 to come out. It would be nice for someone to come up with a solution IMO.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Still same block and same bolts (bolt length has varied on a few model numbers). Believe the gasket has changed since 06, but not sure. Either way, it appears they still have the same issue. There is still a weak point where the oil ports are and it is proned to leaking in that area.
Is yours still leaking?

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Every Briggs I have seen began leaking at the case gasket at between 50 and 100 hours.... Good news is that the aftermarket gasket holds up much better.... Mine was leaking slightly by 70 hours and the aftermarket gasket that went in is over 100 hours and has not leaked at all yet....

What is involved with changing out the gasket? Which one are you finding that doesn't leak?

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Mine leaked stock at 75 hours, and had it replaced. My cam wiped a lobe so I modded my motor, and about 30 hours later its leaking. been leaking ofr the last 10-12 hours of run time. My block/ frame on the starboard side is Damp with oil. its my form of preventing saltwater corrosion.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
BoatDr, are you having better luck than the 30-50 hours these other guys are having? You using the torque sequence the Gary has posted a few times, right? Anything else done differently? Sealants, loctite?

Mine leaked once around 100 hours and SETX Performance changed mine out while doing the mods (cam), no leaks yet. 250 hours & counting

The Briggs motor is not made for the amount of vibration. Since mud motors are a small part Briggs business. They haven't addressed it yet.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
Andy did mine a few years ago and I've put about 100 hours on it now. It just started leaking again but to be fair, I recently found 3 out of 4 of my motors mounts loose where the engine bolts to the PD plate. So I'm assuming that vibration is what caused it because it was pretty darn loose and wobbly.
FYI - all Prodrive owners should periodically check the tightness of those main engine mounting bolts.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
I agree it will take a case redesign. Sheet gaskets are way too limited to fix this problem.
I like to use a thin layer of Permatex 2A, the black molasis stuff, on sheet gaskets. That combo has worked great for me on industrial process equipment like compressors. Anyone else tried that combo on this problem?

CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
I cleaned up the gasket surfaces on the case with an Emory cloth, put a thin layer of gasket sealer on each side, and used the torque sequence that Gary posted. So far so good, but I only have 75 hours since then.

Re: CDI's any leaking crank case gaskets yet?
About 90 hours on original gasket without drop of oil leaking. I installed cam and heads at 90 hours and am at 50 hours on new gasket without drop of oil. But then I usedd a torque wrench measuring foot lbs instead of inch lbs. Dem bolts are tight tight.

Mine has been leaking since 50 hours. Got 110 now and have no intention of changing it till it's leaking like the engine n my old 1985 chevy truck.

Keep checking the bolts as others have said. I found one a little loose and leaking in this same area.
