I have a 2006 35 mud buddy hyper sport wanting to know what upgrades are best and what to do first. any input would be helpful.

Go big! Start from the bottom up and do it all. BPS Cam, Pistons, Connecting Rods, Roller Rockers, Iron Mountain Heads, 42mm Carb with Black Death intake, Exhaust, and 5100 rev limiter... If anything do the carb, exhaust, and heads.

This question has been asked a lot and you will get a lot of opinions. This is what I would recommend in order and why.

1) High Flow Stainless exhaust- allows the motor to breathe and is the basis for all other mods. The best performing muffler out right now is the BPS crossover with the longer primary pipes and removeable silencer. The stock muffler will rust over time and the orientation of the pipes to the heads risk debris from the muffler getting into the cylinders as it deteriates.

2)BPS IM heads- these have shimmed valve springs to allow higher RPM operation without risking valve float, are decked to increase compression, and have oversized stainless steel one-piece valves and new valve seats, and are ported for more efficient flow. The new valves and seats ensure a much more reliable seal than the stock valves. The higher compression and flow from the larger intake valve and porting will produce more power and RPM for increased load carrying capability and performance. This is a 'bolt on' mod and the BPS heads are 'off the shelf' where you purchase and return your current heads as a core so there is less down time. Depending on how your current valves are seating (leaking intake valves are a common issue with the big block Vanguard) you may see a serious step function in performance. At a minimum you will have much better load carrying capability. There is a step by step install instruction on the BPS forum DIY section.

3) Mikuni Carb kit. This will replace your current carb, intake adapter, and air filter system with a more efficient and tuneable option. You will get night and day throttle response (especially off idle and mid range), load carrying, top end performance, and lower smooth idle. The kit will lock out your governor and add an electronic rev limiter which when combined with the valve springs shims from the heads will allow much higher RPM operation. This is also a 'bolt on' mod and the BPS kit comes with everything you need to install with simple tools and detailed instructions.

4)Stop and evaluate if you have the power and performance that you want. The next series of options involve modifying the internals of the motor.

5)If you want more you can install a performance cam which will give more duration and lift of the valve opening to increase performance. Depending on the cam chosen you will get much better low end torque and load carrying capability- another step function in performance. However, the installation of the cam involves removing the outdrive and breaking open the crank case. If you are doing opening the crank case in conjuntion with installing heads you may consider adding performance pistons and connecting rods. The BPS pistons and longer billet connecting rods give higher compression for even more load carrying capability and low end torque. They will also allow higher RPM operation up to ~5000 RPM. If your cylinders are scarred you can have them either honed or bored out to .020 oversized and get oversized pistons as an option. Adding Cam, Pistions, C-Rods and Roller Rockers with push rods on top of heads and carb will make your motor an HD 5500, one of the strongest motors that MB sells.

There are other options out there for performance parts but the BPS parts are proven recipe for performance and reliability. BoatDr normally stocks these parts and does some pre-assembly and setup of the carb kit to ease install. You can give him a call (504) 224-2814 and he can elaborate on the advantages listed above.
