I'm soiree this has been beat to death around here but I'm wondering how big of a pain in the ass it would be to do rods and pistons in a35. I'm thinking about turning mine into a hd5500.just not sure on the difficulty of building it myself. I've built plenty of high HP car engines and some 2 stroke race bike engines. Just never been in one of these. Id there somewhere I can look to see pics or a how to? Thanks |

If you've built engines before, you know what's inside. There ain't much to it. Search on here and the BPS forum for cam install. I think Gary has something up on the BPS site that has the added instructions for doing pistons and rods. |

What do you mean by "the seal"? The case gasket? Follow the instructions that Gary posted for reassembly. If you can follow instructions, it is not hard at all. Getting a service manual is not a bad idea either. Lots of pics and everything you need to know. Follow the guidelines that Gary posted for reassembling the case though. They seem to be having much better luck with that method than what briggs recommends. Everything else is helpful. |

Gary has the teardown and reassembly instructions posted for the outdrive somewhere too, if that's what your talking about. |

Thanks I know how do basically all thedrive assembly, belt tension, clutch, ect.. Iput my motor on a new frame so I basically got all that covered just curious on motor internals. Mainly how you put crankshaft into the block. I'm sure its not hard just don't want a rats nest. Thanks for the help |

These motors are really pretty simple. If you have done race engines you will finish the job and say to yourself - "that's it?". You can take one down to the bare block in about an hour (including outdrive and smoke breaks). Make sure the new rings are installed in the right sequence and position on the piston (etched mark facing up) and ring gaps are well dispersed around the radius. While you have it torn down have light honing done on the cylinders so you have a fresh crosshatch on them. If you are worried about wear, you may want to have them checked for out of round and check your ring gap, if there is scoring you may want to have them bored out and install oversized pistons. You will need a good piston ring compressor for these smaller pistons- the one from Briggs is junk so don't bother with that one. Install the pistons with the mark on the piston face toward the front of the motor (flywheel side). Make sure the numbers imprinted on the c-rods are facing toward the back of the motor for the corresponding piston (#1 for the #1 cylinder etc...) and the clamps holding the c-rods to the crank are positioned so the flat sides are mated. You will also need a 1/4" 12pt socket for the BPS c-rod bolts, the washers on the c-rod bolts are machined to mate with the flange of the bolt so make sure they are positioned with the correct side up toward the bolt head (when you look at it you will see what I'm talking about), torque them to spec. Use oil in the cylinders before installing the pistons and oil on the new wrist pins, piston skirts, and c-rod joints. After install, operate the crank by hand a couple of revolutions to make sure there is no binding (everything is installed correctly), re-install the cam and lifters with assembly lube and button it back up. The post CB is referring to on the BPS site is 'cam install' in the DIY subforum. It goes through sealing the case gasket. |

I installed a new cam in mine. Didn't even know what the hell it did until I stepped into the project. |

YOu can do it, if you have any questions jump on here during the build and ask for some help, there's plenty of it on here if you need it! |

It shouldn't be a problem if you have fooled with motors some. These thing are really simple. |
