Lemme start out by saying this very well could be a dumb question. But i'm askin anyway.......... I just put together an 05 MB HD 36" outdrive, I bought as a basket case. I put a new 35 vanguard on the frame. It's stock of course at least until the warranty is up. I dropped it in the water for the maiden voyage yesterday. I warmed it up and hit the throttle it was a dog and not a scalded dog. So I pulled the throttle cable a bit and tightened it up. It was a bit better. I finally adjusted it enough it would plane out. After a couple more tweaks I could run about 25 mph but the idle speed is now itw at about 1260 rpm, waaay to high. There must be an idle adjustment on the carb but I sure can't see it. Am I doing something wrong by adjusting the cable to get the itw rpms? I thought I may not have the throttle stroke I needed, but it's the stock throttle that came on the frame. When I have it depressed against the handle it is bottomed out on the throttle rail I checked that. I am planning on going to a different gov. spring. It has a green now. Help a brother out and tell me how to get my idle down to around a grand but not affect the top end rpms. BTW: My top end rpms at wide open throttle iw are only 3540. I was thinking it should be about 3900? Is my thinking right or way off? If I could get another 400+ rpms this sucker will run like a scalded dog! I feel the need for speed. But not at an idle! ![]() I asked this same question on MB forum and have gotten zero replies. I know I will here so lets here what I am doing wrong or what I can do to get what I want.......... Thanks T |

Is it idleing at 1250 in gear in the water or in neutral? It definetly sounds like you have a linkage problemo |

Also, what RPM's can you hit in neutral? If its bout the same, it may be a simple as adjusting your WOT throttle stop |

WB no neutral direct drive 36" outdrive. In the water rpms at idle are 1250. Out of water like 135? to damn high. I may be able to adjust the idle screw but it's not even touching anything right now, it's backed right off. I can slow the idle down by hand by moving the idle screw rod and it idles right down but it won't stay there. MAybe a screw adjustment will work i'll try and see what happens. Smoke |

might be the travel on your linkage or cable. unhook the cable and move the throttle by hand to the idle position. see if it doesnt slow down. did you adjust your govenor by mistake? that will also make top and bottom rpms higher. |

most throttle linkages have several holes in them. by moving closer to the pivot point you will gain travel. |

The tab that yhe govenor springs attached to needs to be bent outward in order to pull the spring further. From the factory they come set neutral the installer has to adjust for specific applications. Same foe idle, bend tab to take tension off the gpvoner. You will then have to adjust your idle screw. You said nothing is touching it now. Bend the tabs a little at a time, the springs work in unison so youll have aome adjusting to do. |
