Personally i would go with the 23, you can make alot more power than that 27 with the parts that are available for the 23. Also finding parts for the 23 are alot easier.

I like the small block 23

Although the 23 is a great motor and parts are readily accessible, I'd go with the Kohler. Carb, exhaust and headwork really wake both engines up. Been there, done that.

For all the comments that there is more parts for the 23 Briggs that's. Not true cause the guy from midwest supercub has way more performance parts for a kohler than anybody that makes parts for the 23 Briggs just some FYI http://www.midwestsupercub.net/catalog.asp

If you're gonna buy a 27 and spend 500-1k to make it hotter you might as well get a 35/36

Vanguard 23 engine wieght-77lbs. Kohler 27 engine wieght-93lbs. Only 16lbs. difference but it all counts. If possible take each one for a ride. They each make power completly different, briggs is really strong on the top end and the kohlers make good power down low and lack a little on the top. What kind of loads you usually carry?

How wide is this hull? 14ft and less than 42 inches wide better stick with a 23 or less.

You don't own a tape measure to tell us how wide it is?

A 36" and a 42" are two totally different stories.

Thier not bad boats, I ran the 15/40 240lbs with an 18hp. Dont recomend putting a 23 on the 14 though, youll kill that boat in a weekend just as I did. I used mine for deep water running for a year and half. Went riding one day in the shallow timber and ruined a good boat. Had a damn good time doing it but it steers to the left and handles like its half full of water. Pass on the mods and get a good hull, youll thank me!
