BoatDr, et al:

New Mikuni carb exhibits following characteristics: after running engine a while, rpms will drop rapidly. This is not predictable enough to say there is a pattern. What do you think is going on:

1. Fuel starvation from clogged delivery system
2. Mixture too lean
3. Mixture too rich
4. water in fuel

Addendum: yes, tank is vented.

Well, I just changed the fuel filter. That was it!! Engine cranks right up with no hesitation on throttle up. We'll see tomorrow in real action.

Engine rpm dropped again today only once. It seems like the fuel flow isn't matching the engines demand. I've got an electric fuel pump. It ran just fine once I stopped and let it rest for 30 seconds.

5/16 line or 1/4? Need to run 5/16 from tank to pump. Also pump might need to be stronger. You're running out of fuel.

5/16 all around.

Y'all don't think this behavior could have anything to do with the the air filter being so close to the exhaust manifold?

Check and see if the float and needle are hanging up and not fully opening

You had this issue when we were running, did you ever look inside the tank to see if there is junk floating around inside. I had similar issues last summer with an old tank that had junk and even some water in the gas. We changed filters and it ran for a while until we had similar results. Poured the gas in a giant pickle jar and saw water in the bottom. That and the junk in the bottom of the tank were the culprits.

The only reason I don't think it is fuel line delivery is that you can't repeat the circumstances that make it act that way. Too random.. you had it right away, then it was fine when you switched tanks, then it came back later..

Just my .02 cents...

Could very well be junk in the tank. I know my small 3 gallon tank has a plastic fill spout floating around in it, but its not the one that was giving me trouble. I'll have to empty it some how and check for water and debris. Thanks for the suggestion.
