Post subject:  fouling plugs on brand new vanguard

Hey guys

Started out with a 16hp godevil. Too slow so I bought a brand new 23 hp vanguard off ebay and put it on the 16hp godevil frame. ALong with the new engine I bought godevil's brand muffler to put on the 23 since it was supposed to be quieter and it looks nice. I run it on a 1542 jon.

Anyway, after about 25 gallons of fuel, I have put 3 new sets of plugs in. It looks like it is gas-fouling the plugs. They come out with a dry black chalky soot. After about 4 gallons of running on the river, it slowly starts loosing power. After abot 10-15 gallons it runs like crap.

What I am wondering is if anyone knows if godevil modifies or has briggs modify their vanguards that they sell with their lower units to accomodate for a more restricting exhaust? I am thinking the exhaust is too restricting and causing the fouled plugs. I would have just called godevil but they are closed till monday so I figured I see if you guys had anything to say.

Other than that, maybe timing? Or the restricting exhaust causing it to overheat?

It is a stock 23 exhaust made by briggs, it's not one special made by GD.
They just carry the model that fits their frames.

It sounds like it's running too rich and carbon fowling the plugs, may just need to adjust the air mixture on the carb.
Does it blow black smoke out of the exhaust pretty regular?

nope, i have never noticed any smoke out of the exhaust, or rich smelling exhaust. air cleaner is clean, nothing else has every been touched.

I agree with Woodie; it sounds like it's running rich. How is your choke linkage set up? Is it possible that the choke is staying on? What plug are you running? a Champion RC12YC?

It's not possible for the timing to be off. The cam sprocket is spun direct drive counter rotating to the crankshaft. Similar to most diesels, or the ol Ford 300L6. As far as the exhaust goes, that's unlikely as well. Assuming its new, the baffles shouldn't be rusted out, nor should there be any other restriction. If the exhaust were clogged, it would have a hard time running at high rpm.

At part throttle, turn your mixture screw in clockwise until you hear the rpm begin to drop, and the engine shake. Back the screw out one revoultion, and that should be set correctly.

If you still don't like that, then take the main jet out of the 16hp motor, and put it in the 23hp motor. Looking at the blower housing, there will be a 5/8 plug on the lower right hand side of the carb. remove that plug (or pull the anti afterfire solenoid), and you will now be able to gain acess to the main jet. You may need to pull the blower housing in order to get the screwdriver in there. Be sure you use a wide blade flathead, other wise you'll only be grabbing one side of the jet, and you'll strip it. It's brass, so be careful.

You could also try and just swap the carbs, but you gotta pull the intake off the heads in order to remove the two bolts that hold the carburetor onto the intake. It may be a little less of a hassle to just remove the jet.

I've always wondered how the motors run mounted on the transom sitting at an angle, and not horizontal or vertical given the engine configuration. If you have the carburetor at too much of an angle, then the float chamber isn't allowing the correct pitch of the float, and the needle metering the fuel will be compromised.

Last but not least, just take the motor off the frame, mount it to a stand in your garage, and run it in its proper horizontal position.
