What's the best bang for the buck? Some say do exhaust then carb.. Then I've seen exhaust then heads..
What's the better combo to do when getting started?

I've done just carb & exhaust with decent gains. I plan to try just cam, heads & exhaust next to compare the difference.

Exhaust is baseline for any further mods. Heads ensure you have a good seat on your valves, takes that out of the equation and is the best gain/$ IMO, you want more then go with the carb next.

I did Exhaust, Carb and then heads and I seen the biggest gain after I did the heads. If I did it again I would do heads before a carb. I think the Cam and Heads gave me the biggest gain in total but if your looking to stay away from going internal then I would do exhaust and heads first

My rusty stock exhaust forced me to make that change first, although that was my plan. I then made a visit to Calen for the heads. I am very impressed with the difference that the heads made. My next mod will probably be a cam later this summer. I may just stay stock with the carb.

I have headwork, Hoyt cam, and exhaust. I set my Governor to 4350 and drive my boat. It works well.

What's the 'average' cost to get heads done?

^^It depends how your going to do it, If you take your heads to a reputable engine shop and have them do all the work its probally going to save you a couple hundred bucks, The guy here does it for 230
