Anything over idle is not good.

Take it from me I just had to replace my input shaft on the lower unit and splined coupling. Both were rounded out.

And I don't do it that often. 285 hours on the unit.

At the shop where I get my parts they had boxes of input shafts and splined coupling that were rounded out.

Its not made for that.

Ok. Dat don't help. What's yer idle speed? Some guys run em higher then others. What dictates off idle? 1200? 1300? 1500???

Idle should almost always be 1000-1300 rpm, depending on the setup. In most cases, 1200-1250.

Get out there and idle it down on the water as low as it will go before it chokes out under a load.

My 24 Honda won't go below 1200 very well, but I have friends with 23's that can go 800-900
