Post subject: | Beat to death but I'm stuck on mod decision |
I have used the search engine for the past week looking at every possible combination and really haven't gotten a good answer for what I want to know. I know mod topics are beat to death but... It appears most are concerned with top speed on mods but I need load carrying power for up to 850lbs - 1000lb load in a 17x54 with a 36PD. This is 3 guys and enough gear to bowfish all night and bring back a couple hundred pounds of fish. Currently, the boat wont get over 3600 rpm and just plows with this kind of load. I don't expect to mod and run 29 with this load but it would be nice if it would get out of the water and possibly run on step. From what I understand either changing the heads or at least changing the valves and porting and polishing the heads will give the most gain along with a more open exhaust. Now I'm stuck on a cam or carb? Alot of you guys are running cam, heads, exhaust with the factory carb and say it works. I'm thinking of going this route and have the option of adding a new carb later if needed. Any experineced insight on what would be best for torque and durability would greatly be appreciated. Sorry for the possible repeat of a subject, I just haven't been able to find the answer for torque and not speed... |

With a cam and heads, I figure you need the roller rockers and heavy duty push rods, correct? Does anything need to be done to the lower end of the motor with this mod, or will that end handle the changes? Thanks again. BTW, I'm from Florida and have seen Calebs name mentioned on here but how can I get inn touch with him to find out where he's located and what he suggests? |

I'm with Terry. I run heavy fishing loads. 3 guys. 120 yetti, casting deck, poling platform and trolling motor, 2 batteries and 14ga of gas. I run 29-30 with my mods. I'm also in an 1860 though. |

He is a sponsor on here!! As fir as rockers and rods no!! I have stock pistons and rods!! Heads and a cam from Hoyt I do have a black death intake and carb!! I really think carb and intake are not needed!! You want a motor that has a good bottom end!! One thing to remember modded motors don't like go be under a heavy load and turning low rpm's!! In other words 3500 rpm's under a load is not good creates a bad vibration inside the motor!! I have a prop that I use only for bowfishing! With 4 people and all my gear it runs 24 mph but turns around 4000 rpm!! That just my experience !! |

Spoke with Cody, waiting to see if he has heads and an intake in stock so i wont have any down time. He pretty much confirmed my first instinct of carb, heads and exhaust. I got twisted reading where some are doing a cam, heads, exhaust on factory carb combo... I'm having issues with the factory carb on idle no matter how you adjust it. I understand the Minkuni idles better and has an accelerator pump as well. Should be much smoother. Thanks for the pointers,I will post up when I make the changes with a review. |

Do a cam while your at it. I did heads, carb, and exhaust first then added a cam. Cam really woke it up. |

Heads ,cam ,exhaust will carry more of a load than carb and heads. I would always put a cam before a carb |

If you have enough knowlege to do heads carb and exhaust. you should be able to do the cam. |

Will, get with bbb from bainbridge. He did the cam on his GD. If you want to test a pd with heads, carb, and exhaust, put your shit in my boat and we will see what she will do. (I didn't have the heads at the Mic ride) |
