Post subject:  MM engines with reverse?

I was originally looks at the Gator tail motor with reverse because of the instant reverse. Then after hearing that it doesn't have much power in reverse (standing on dock you could hold the boat in place while someone had it full power in reverse the boat wouldn't move until the guy on the dock let go). Not sure how true this is. Then I considered the pro drive w/ full power reverese. I am now leaning to the mud buddy motor because for close to the same price for reverse I can get a bigger motor. My question is for those that have reverse, how often does it come in handy, and if you had to do it all over again would you still get reverse?

As a guy who always said "I don't need reverse," I find myself using it constantly. As far as the guy standing on the dock holding the boat in place, tell him to come grab my bow & show me. I promise you, he's gettin wet or lettin go.

As for the PD vs GT vs MB decision, only 2 of these motors are actually in production & can be obtained in a reasonable time frame. The other hasn't been released to the public yet, but he'll gladly take your deposit & maybe get you a motor produced sometime in 2012. Go test drive them & decide for yourself which motor best suits your needs & is more convenient for your daily use.

Thanks man! So your happy with your gtr? If u get stuck going forward does the reverse work in getting you unstuck by going in reverse? I thought that's what I wanted originally until I went and priced out a gator trax today

Not completely purchased, dic.

As for getting unstuck with reverse, doesn't matter which one you get, if you're stuck bad enough, you're stuck. PD is obviously a stronger reverse, because the prop is spinning in the diection it's meant to, vs spinning in reverse motion. The down side is that it takes a few seconds to put the motor in reverse, whereas you get instant reverse with a GTR.

As far as the guy holding on too the bow i would have to agree with Camo on that one, let him hold on to my bow, he'll for sure get wet. While not as strong as the prodrive reverse they are a little more user friendly and can get you out of a bind. Just a little backward forward motion dig yourself a hole and the GTR will come right on out

Take your time, test drive them both, they are both good machines.

Post subject:  Re: MM engines with reverse?

The GTR reverse is not as powerful as the prodrive, no argument there. But it is adequate to get you unstuck. It pulls better in the mud than in deep water. Like Camo said, if u STUCK, sometimes a freight train cant get u out!

i have recently been introduced to the gatortail and the instant reverse is awesome! however if you wanna back up more than 2 or 3 feet it's a pain in the dick. i was in a situation a few weeks ago where i had run a ditch that was a almost as wide as my boat and then it ended a 1/4 mile in the marsh and had to back out the whole way. a gatortail would of made it out, but it woulda took a hell of a lot longer to do it.

Here is my opinion on the deal.

GTR reverse is very much a convenience although it can get you out of some places, if I was frogging, running nets, or had a set run down a shallow trail every day to my blinds and could use the instant reverse to back in and out of the blinds/chase cripples GTR would be the motor to own.

One place I've seen GTR's struggle where a PD doesn't do bad is reversing in thick grass, a prop pulling backwards with no raked skeg to deflect grass will build up a ball of the stuff around the transom and eventually stop you. A PD can get up on top of this by lifting the transom up out of the water and pushing it all under the boat.

It's really a no-brainer, test them both in the places that you will use them

Post subject:  Re: MM engines with reverse?

Its going forward in a prodrive in thick grass thats the problem. both will run across the top just fine but idling through it frogging is a whole nother story. My brother in law and i frog together twice a week , he has a prodrive I have a gtr. GTR is a waaaay better frogging motor hands down, we both agree on that.

Post subject:  Re: MM engines with reverse?

But yes WB, they do plug up with grass in reverse pretty bad. I think i may build a dual rig with one GTR and one prodrive. use the GTR for idling forward and the prodrive for reverse!

In every situation Gtr dominate a Pd !!plain and simple!!

Post subject:  Re: MM engines with reverse?

I like them both. I own a GTR and would definately not say EVERY situation GTR is better. GO down a canal as wide as the boat with high banks that u cant turn around and tell me FPR wouldnt be better.

Post subject:  MM engines with reverse?

Ok Pd's fpr is way better than their forward!!

There are video's you made of yourself where the GTR is getting either mud or grass so wraped up around the transom and belt housing it stops you.

I've seen em all get clogged with grass at low speeds. Gotta open em up ta get it off. Like stated above, there ain't a way I'd go 300 yards up a slough that ya can't turn yer boat around in and not have FPR. The under water weeds in the Horicon and other marshes up here are WAY too thick ta have a standard reverse rotational prop power through it.

I was outside awhile ago messing with my boat and said "I sure wish I could see things like DDM does"

BAM!!!! Lightning struck and cut my boat in half! Now I understand clearly!
GTR's are best cause he said so!!!!

And I don't even have to hit the exclamation marks anymore!!!
It does that on its own!!!!

Post subject:  Re: MM engines with reverse?

i can tell you this,,,without it. Doing shit as simple as froggin i found myself not only using it...but needing it...

i would have been screwed for a while with only forward. If you dont have it, you better keep some hip waders in your boat cause you will end up pushing for sure. No matter what one you get the reverse will help you get out of a bind much more easy...

cammo and takem,if yall gtr throws that much water in reverse that it will wet the guy on the dock then yall should look into one of them reversin plates!
wow i thought mine was bad,it only wets me and any passengers sittin on the back bench.
just kiddin ;)

You wont hold a GTR rig and keep it from backing up thats for sure. They back up just fine. However in Terry's wildest dream its still not FPR. If you buy into the fact that you dont need reverse then you kidding yourself. And the most important fact to keep in mind at this time is MB is not selling a reverse at this point. And their track record is if they say coming in September, they mean 2014.............
