Post subject:  Speed Question????????

I have a 1652 excel boat with pods on rear and 29 hp Kawasaki motor on MudBuddy he sport. I am wondering what kind of speeds I should get out of boat. Is this boat too big for this motor? I can only get about 10 mph out of it. It has no clutch, short shaft, tall transom and gets up to around 3500 rpms when running wide open. New belt on it

Bout twice what you are getting now. Rpms sound good but "short shaft tall transom" don't sound right, but I might be missing something, typing it just felt wrong.

those pods do not help. and i agree, transom height may have something to do with it.

Check prop.
Also, if you have an older Hyper Drive & a tall transom boat, I'm pretty sure you should have a 48" outdrive on it.

Oh, & pods aren't even for long tails, they're for outboards

I thought the 36" was for the short transom, & 48" was for the tall transom, could be wrong tho (it has happened once before  )

I actually converted it to tall transom, it was short. It has 27" shaft from center of housing out toward prop. I also made it a direct drive and took clutch off to c if it would fix problem. It just will not Push boat but bout 10 mph and when u r going str8 and move handle left or right, it feels like it loses all power like its not getting enough water with those pods that r on back

Having computer trouble, only pics I have r on my phone and I don't know if I can load them from it. I keep seeing guys with kawasaki 29hp motors saying they have theirs tuned out of water to 4000 rpms and in water at around 3800 rpms. Anything to this?

Post subject:  Re: Speed Question????????

the difference of you turning 3500 rpm and the others turning 3800 rpm is not your main issue at the moment, 300 rpm is not enough to double your speed

what is the size and pitch of the prop you have on it, what is the height of your belt housing in relationship to the bottom of the boat, should slightly above the bottom of your boat

Bottom of housing is slightly above bottom of boat. Size and pitch????????????? Measures 12 inches at widest point

Ok, I've had everything checked on motor and motor is good I'm running a 12.25x10 prop on the boat and I've adjusted rpms to around 3800 in water, I shimmed motor 1/2" like I was advised to try by Micah at MudBuddy. NO LUCK! I am beginning to think MudBuddy motor are pos! Only thing left on boat I haven't filled with is the out drive. Would this being a 27" out drive have anything to do with the feel of the prop slipping if it's not getting enough water? ALL help is appreciated as I am almost to the point of dumping motor off my boat in the river and letting the fish use it as cover. Thanks and help

Get rid of the pos hull and you would see vast improvements. Get pics posted, would help a lot

Post subject:  Re: Speed Question????????

so you're getting 3800 rpms in water and only 10mph???

Like mentioned above, check prop. Not just diameter, but make sure you still have some cup left. I ran a 29hp kawi and when the cup wore down (prop was still 12") I lost 6mph at empty load and even more speed the more weight I put in it. I had Hopkins prop add cup and I was back to low & mid 20's loaded. I actually liked the kawi for many reasons, I just ended up selling bc I wanted to be in the mid 30's loaded. If you still have cup left on the prop, then I'd look at the boat/pods.

Do you have any buddy went a mud motor hull?, maybe you can swap motors around and see the outcome.

Pods are creating turbulence around prop, cavitation, prop not getting enough bite.

Talked to him earlier, pods have been removed. I was thinking the same thing.

So he's having these problems with the pods removed? Is the boat a flat bottom

Ya know, I didn't ask. I saw Excel & thought of their mud boat line. I forgot all about the Vipers & other hulls.

Boat is semi v with icebreaker ridge on Front. Past that it's flat and slick. #'s on prop are 12.25x10. I told team Camo last nite, my transom measures 17" and I have a tall transom housing on motor and he advised that that could be problem.
