 7 hp Kohler throttle jumping
I have a 7 hp kohler copperhead mud motor. I noticed that sometimes when I rev the motor up to max the throttle jumps back and forth to a lower RPM. It is not just the throttle cable because I tried holding the actual throttle on the engine and it still did it. I can see the spring and something that revs the motor physically moving back and forth--I am mechanically challenged when it comes to motors if you can't tell--. Through the search I found someone replaced one of the small springs and it replaced the problem. Also, through google searches I found it could possibly be it needs a carb clean. Either of these sound correct? Thanks.

Re: 7 hp Kohler throttle jumping
hes right. its your govener spring. its only doing that cause you are reving it up with no load on it. put it on a boat and in the water and it will not do that. the govener is doing that for a reason to prevent you from over reving it and blowin it up.

Re: 7 hp Kohler throttle jumping
It did it a few times while on the water the other day too, but when I think about it, it was probably when I was digging out of mud or when my motor flared up out of the water. You are probably right. Thanks for the help, I'll run it a few more times and pay closer attention to it next time before I start messing with anything.
