Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
It depends on who builds it. Each mechanic has their own definition of 1and 2 etc.

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
^^^ exactly. Calen & Hoyt stage 1 consists of cam, heads, & exhaust, SETX stage 1 is carb, heads, & exhaust.

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
Hoyt's stage 2 consists of his stage 1 and adding a Mikuni 42mm carb.

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
is the heads a major factor in the performance, if i added a Cam and exhaust without the head work, would there be a huge difference or only slightly
looking for increase in low end torque and carry capacity without spending a small fortune

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
Hoyt's stage 1 is known for reliability and load carrying. what your running empty now is what you'll run with a decent sized load(2-3 ppl and gear) and will gain a few mph in solo speed. i think Hoyt's stage 1 costs righ around $1800.00 installed (thats heads P&P included) and in my opinion as well as many others is worth every penny.

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
thanks, considering heads and exhaust first if that will be the most noticable increase

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 etc
BrianB, just remeber , a combustion engine is little more than an air pump, this is grossly over simplified but an airpump none the less. When you asked about heads, look at how they function, gas and air in to the combustion chamber - exhaust gas out. The faster and more effeciently you can do that the better, ie....bigger valve heads, more clearence more gas an air.
