Post 35 GTR bogging on acceleration
My 35 GTR (Calen's Stage 1) starts good, idles good (1400 OOW, 1100 IW & in gear) and has no problems running WOT (4200 in gear). My problem is the hole shot or when trying to get out of mud or weeds. The engine wants to bog down when throttle is applied. If I S-L-O-W-L-Y accelerate, it will pick up the rpms like it should. If I nail it, she just bogs down, sometimes dies. This sounds like a simple carb adjustment to me. Calen did try to PM me back on how to adjust but the new server issue stole the PM he sent. So....Can someone post up a picture of which adjustment screw to turn and the procedure for setting the mixture? I can do it all day long on carbed outboards but never tried it on a Vanguard.

Thanks,
Curl

If you take a few minutes to give me a call I can walk you through what you need to adjust.

I will call you either this weekend or next Calen. Engine is down at the lake but I'm not. Sent you a text to the number in your sponsor ad but it must not get to you.

Curtail are you running a Mikuni ? If so, its probly a minor accelerator pump adjustment.

Nope, stock carb. Only got 4.4 hrs on engine. I'll give Calen a ring when I get back down to the lake. Can't be too hard. Heck, I just might wait till I need to re-set the valve lash and do it afterward. Other than the bogging, this rig is bad to the bone. I got some Gator Glide G2 to put on the bottom before season starts. I am loving the ability this gives me over what my old outboard setup delivered. Uncle J 17x52 is the perfect size for me. I see you live in T-Town Mud. I stay in Benton but live at Yarborough landing. Will be down weekend after this one to run it some more.

Post Re: 35 GTR bogging on acceleration
That ain't no lie. I had a dude couple of weeks ago sitting at the edge of Snake Creek. I came through there about 200 yards from him on plane and ran from the river all the way to the back side of Mud Lake. I figured being 200 yards away was not going to disturb the guy. OMGosh, about 20 minutes later as i was fishing, the boat I passed came idling into Mud Lake. I saw him come through the creek and he was bouncing off of stumps like a crazy fool. This was a Bass CAt Couger with a 250 Merc on it. I kept thinking how long the hull would last on that punishment. He must have been running at about 2000 RPM cause when he hit a stump, it was loud enough to hear the impact all the way in the back where I was. Anyway, I see this guy stop and hold his hands up like he was looking through bino's. He spotted me and here he came. I figured he wanted to take a look at the boat and engine to see how in the heck I ran through that crap so fast. Instead, he was as red-faced as if he was going to explode, and breathing real heavy. I thought the guy was going to have a freaking heart attack. I didn't have time to ask if he was ok cause this fella was PISSED. He got to within 20 yards of me and shut down. After about 20 minutes of listening to this joker rant and rave about how bad he hates mud motors, the noise they make, and how I just ruined his fishing hole, I knew it was going nowhere fast. Now I ain't exacyly a small fella (6' 270 but mostly fat) and I got a mean streak that is hard to hold back when the right button is punched. He got to that button when he said he ought to just crawl over in my rig and show me how he just feels.

Ok, up to that point, I have not said one word, nothing, just sat there with my mouth open. Figured it was time to see what this boy had so I asked him to come look at my boat, personal and up close. I didn't mean to show him the features and functions either. Well, he kinda realized that might be a bad mistake and started calming down. I threw him a cold beer and a sandwich, didn't say a word to him and trolled on down the bank fishing. I was hoping he would just relax a bit, eat the sandwich and drink the cold one, then go away. Oh heck no......next thing I know he has done called up a buddy (another boat) and they meet back up with me on the old roadbed just up river from the main entrance to Mud. Now I carry just about everywhere I go and I had my XD .40 that day holstered and concealed inside my waist band. They both come ideling up to the boat and I just sit there waiting. The buddy says "this the boat and guy you told me about?" The red faced guy in the BassCat tells him "yep" and sure enough, the buddy starts coming over with his trolling motor. My hand goes to the small of my back on the ready. OMGosh....this nut job starts letting me have it twice as bad and 3 times as loud. About 10 minutes into this verbal ass-whipping I was "again just taking silently”, I stopped it by pulling up the trolling motor and firing up the GTR. The "buddy" started hollering "wait dangit, wait, wait" so I shut off the engine. See, I didn't want the situation to get to the point of no return so I asked him what he wanted. Would you believe it.......

He said and I quote..."Well my friend said he lashed out a string of anger for 20 minutes at you and it got him a beer and a smoked brisket sandwich. He called and asked if I was hungry and to meet up with him in Mud Lake. He said he bet me $20 bucks that if I were to rant and rave on you, I would get a sandwich and beer too."

I started laughing harder than I have in a long, long time. We all pulled over in the shade on the side of the river and the BassCat red-faced guy apologized for being an ass. He told me he was going through a very rough time and thought he could get away from it all on the lake. Turns out his troubles followed him and bad news got to him via his cell phone. He told me when I came by in my boat, something clicked about the noise and that I ran through the lilly's he was eventually going to fish, that he clicked. Said he had every intention of giving me an ass-whipping till he saw my frame size, then figured he would just let it all out in anger. When I didn't say nothing back and threw him the eats and drink, he sat there just stammered that he ended up looking like the ass he was. So he laughed a bit and decided to have some fun with me by getting two of them to approach me once again, cept he wanted to see if he could get his buddy a sandwich.

In the end, I listened to his problems, gave his buddy a beer (no sandwich left) and found out the two of them were long time duck hunting buddies. The loved my boat and the layout. Even took the "buddy" for a ride through some thick stuff.

Yep, these things will definitely piss off some bass fishermen. Always be prepared to pass out sandwiches and beer.

That's a good one Curl. You always have the option of trimming up and cooling them off with a little water too.

Love the story! I like to run through them when they are all fishing the mouth of horseshoe. Never had one chase me down, but I know it's soon to come.

Remember that when one starts fishing outside your decoys this season and won't move.[/quote]

You'd just have to know how the bass fisherman are around here. Every one of them are pros, and they all think you should get out of their way. So I piss them off any chance I get.
