Post Advanced Timing Key
I'm looking to advance my timing. Can anyone please advise on how many degrees or where to buy a timing key. EVT's sight is no longer available.

I have a 35 GT. So far I put a Mikuni, Black-death intake, Iron Mountain heads and a cross-over exhaust. I tried to order roller rockers today but I'll have to call and order them tomorrow.

Post Re: Advanced Timing Key
Its an 06 engine so its not a CDI. To be honest I'm turning a 12X10 at 3850 runing 28-29 on GPS! in the sweet spot and I was looking to turn around 4000 to put me at 30. My goal is to run 30 with 2 people and a hunting load so I can hunt the Wax or make a decent run in decent time. One guy told me if I advance the timing it would give me the RPM's I'm looking for. But after a little research I don't think I want to sacrifice the balance issues. I'm going to put roller rockers and a ported/polished air Intake manifold. I think that would be a better option than advancing my timing. I don't want a race boat but I don't want a slow but to china ya know.

to run 30 with 2 people and gear you will need more than a timing key.

Agreed.

I already have a Mikuni, Blackdeath intake, Iron Mountain Heads and a Cross Over Exhaust. Now I'm gonna add roller rockers and a after market air intake manifold.

My motor with heads cut .020, Hoyts cam, timing key, and stock carb can run 4 people and some shit over 4k. I have a some wear on the prop aswell. WIth your mod's you should be able to spin above 4k with only 2 people.

Post Re: Advanced Timing Key
My wheel is brand new 12X10 and I can turn it 4000 but i loose speed. The best speed is at 3850. With 3 people. I didn't get a chance to run it by myself or with 2 people yet. I done those mods then had to go offshore so I plan on swapping props and moving my pin up/down when I get home to tweek what I already have. When I said after market manifold I ment my buddy has one that has been ported/polished. Not sure who done it. I'm going with rollers due to the 1.5 versus 1.3 ratio on the valves and if that doesn't give me what I want I will add a cam. I was hoping not to have to open the engine but if I do I will go ahead and change pistons, connecting rods and cam while I'm their. This motor is on a 16' Carolina so I don't need quite as much motor as you guys to reach 30.

Does anyone know if an 06 motor had a different gear ratio than current motors. This motor when purchased had a 10 1/2" wheel on it. And my first gator tail came with a 11". I heard that Gator tail is now offering different gear ratio's. Anybody got any info on that, pro's and con's.

My Speeds were 28-29 on GPS and I don't round up LOL! I hit 29.8 with the current behind me. And that was with 3 people in deep water. I'm sure if I run with 2 people in shallow water I can reach 30 easy. Unfortunately I had to go straight offshore after I did the Mods so I didn't get any chance to experiment with other props or anything.

If you did that with 3 ppl you should surely hit 30 with 2 an by yourself easy in the 30

I don't think that he will be able to run it by himself  He and I went ride it before the mods and if I didn't sit all the way forward it would bounce you out the boat

Not to much trouble its just Money! I had a goal to ride 30 with 2 and a hunting load. I have a few friends with stock surface drives and loaded you lucky to run 25. When you making a long run it does make a difference. I don't want any lillies passing me up.

$300.00+ roller rockers are NOT going to give you a noticeable performance gain.

You need to spend that money on a aftermarket cam if you haven't already done so.

Nothing I own is still stock from the factory so chances are the GT will end up having a cam, pistons, rods and the hole 9 yards so I think I'm gonna go ahead and change the rockers so they will be their after the season to finish the rest of the mods. It runs damn good now so I'll leave it this way until after the season. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Rockers ain't gonna do anything at all you'll never feel a performance difference with them

here is the skinny on rocker arm ratio. a 1.5:1 rocker arm will move a valve 1.5 times the lift of the cam. lets use whole numbers here. or if u know ur lift plug it in. lets say ur cam has a lift of .5 inches mutiply 1.5 x .5 that will give u your actual valve movement. total of .75 valve movement. now do the same with a 1.7:1 ratio. .85 inches valve movement. so by increasing ur ratio u are increasing the lift of the cam the same amount. going from .75 - .85 pretty much. u will be moving more air in and more air out. two things to look out for is valve to piston clearence and valve spring height. so if u understand this .i can't understand why some say u get no gain out of a ratio change in most engine builds.

I agree. I understand you wouldn't gain much speed but I have Mikuni and BD bringing good air in and I have crossover exhaust taking the air out but my heads aren't getting maximum air mixture even though I have iron mountain heads I think the rollers would be a good addition. Plus I will probably change the cam and pistons so why not change the rollers now it only takes a few minutes.
