Post subject:  New Throttle, Speed Issue

I recently added a new BPS throttle to my Mud Buddy, and it seems like I have less power. It seems like my motor is not hitting is peak performance level, and not holding high RPMs for very long. I have adjusted the linkage and the throttle is properly manipulating the full range of the carburetor’s throttle.

This weekend was the first time I had taken the boat out in a while. Last year I was running between 26-28mph with three guys 100+ decoys and all of the other goodies you take out to the field with you. This weekend I had four guys about 45+ decoys and I was running between 14-16mph.

Maybe its just time for me to tear her down and add a cam, heads, ect?

If it was running fine before changing the throttle cable w/ the new lever then it's something you are missing

If you changed before running it this season then it could be a lot of things including fuel. Test your compression and leakdown

Check and make sure you got all the slack out of the new cable, you might not be getting full travel

I did not run it this season before doing the install. And there doesn't seem to be any slack between the throttle control and the carb. When I have the throttle all the way down, the carb seems to be as open as it will go. I am concerned that it may not be the throttle at all.

How would I test my compression?

Hold up brother, flush all the old gas outta your system and clean your carb. Change your spark plugs and put her in the water. If you are still not satisfied then come back w/ what you did and how it ran. I would blow the fuel lines out and change any fuel filters while you are at it.

I woundn't be suprised if it is a fuel issue. the fuel I am running now had been sitting in that tank for about four or five months without being messed with.

Part of me wants to go ahead and use this problem as an excuse to get some performance upgrades done. While I am sure it is an issue I can fix myself, I wouldn't mind putting the motor in the shop for a couple of weeks to get some quality performance parts put in. Does anyone have recomendations for a shop in Texas, perferably not too far from Houston, that does top notch work and can turn it around quickly? Just a thought.

Thanks.

Now you are giving us the full answer.
It's ok to tell your wife that we all said the motor was screwed and needed heads and a carb to perform properly. I would never let her know it was just some stale gas.

If you ask real nice, I'm sure Cody at SETX would even write you an excuse (note) to show her what had to be added.
