Last saturday went to the camp road about 5 hours in.the boat, boat ran awesome didnt miss a lick until coming home... i got on step ran about 5 minutes had to cross a set of pilings so i slowed down got.of step and my motor died. Went to crank it back up and wouldnt start... i made sure i had fuel which i did and then i checked spark and i didnt have any on left side i for some reason didnt check right... i pulled the cowling of and tapped.on both coils... i got the motor to crank but only running.on one cylinder.and only could.idle.for a.while until it seemed to pick up... i was able to get rpms but still sounded like only one cylinder was working right... everytime the motor would miss a blue flame would come.out the left exhausr.... how do i check to see if coil is bad or do i need to look else where for a problem... this is a modded 35 non cdi |

I am not certain but could this be the result of a valve stuck open? |

Chance the plug wires got wet when this happened? check for cracks in the boots. With one spark plug wire pulled the engine should continue to run. Chances are if it doesn't the coil is bad. Check your gapping on the coils. I have always used a business card but the other day Richard Nagon said 2 cereal box tops is on the money. Take his word. Also take the valve cover off to make sure the valves are still moving. |

Coils fire mechanically when the flywheel magnet turns past it. It will either fire or not. You can check them by putting your tach wire on each one, if its firing it will read RPM when you crank it. If you have an oil pressure sensor, disconnect it and see if thats keeping you from firing. You can eliminate the wiring harness by disconnecting the ground wires at the coils - this disables the key and kill switch, as well as oil pressure sensor. You will have to choke it or pull the plug wires to turn it off. |

I pulled ground wires off on coils on the water didnt help or make a difference.. my tach wire was on right side and was reading rpms so ill switch to left see if thats tells me anything |

kja if u got a adjustable spark tester set it at .160 if u can jump the tester electodes at that gap ur coil should be fine. u can also ck resistence by red lead to plug wire and black to the coil laminanates and reading should be i believe between around 2500 to 5000 ohms i'll ck on that and let u know or if u can find it on briggs site. the test procedure used to be covered in manuel ms7862. back in the day. coil air gap should be between 10 - 12 not 05. also ck ur plug in. at stator see if its burn't or corrided |

Camo, wasn't someone making fun of you a few days ago for talking about the rev limiter? ![]() Some folks have trouble and others never do. Gotta hold your mouth right. ![]() |

Just an electronic device. Sometimes they just quit, kinda like blenders & light bulbs |
