Post subject:  MM affecting PD Reverse?

I had the hydraulic reverse put on my PD after I bought it in 09, and here lately it seems that everytime im in a bind and need the reverse the dam thing doesnt want to work. It will always work when the motor was just started but once its heated up the motor on the resivoior just whines and the cylinder barely moves if it moves at all. I called PD and they told me that it was because the MM exhaust was heating up the fluid in the cylinder and causing it not to work correctly, while this makes sense Ive been reading on here for a while and havent seen anyone elese with this problem and was wondering if I was just the only one. I thought it could have been the packing on the cylinder but I ordered the kit from PD and when I took it apart all the seals seemed to look in good shape so im at a loss on what it could be. Am I the only one having this problem and if not how did yall work around it?

make a heat shield...if that dosent work, take it in to pd......

I had the same issue, had to have my hydro cylinder replaced. Peck said the heat is too close. took it off and gutted my stock and put it back on.

Mine did this also with the mm,,its the muffler...either wrap the cylinder with exhaust wrap, or build a heat shield or go back to gutted stock..

I think it actually heats the cylinder enough to expand it letting the fluid bypass the seals...

Thanks guys I was thinking about wraping the cylinder with heat wrap so im gonna try that out if that doesnt work what yall think about the BPS Q exhaust it looks closer to the stock design?

I've never seen a Q mounted so I don't know what kind of clearance there will be between the cylinder and muffler. try the header wrap then if that doesn't work I would go to gutted stock.

Thanks for the quick replys I love the way my MM sounds so ima try the heat wrap but im glad to hear that the Q is a good choice cause I dont have my stock muffler any more

I had the same issue wif a crossover. I made a simple heat shield and it solved the problem. If it has been going on the piston may be leaking from the heat affecting the outer seal also.

if the heat wrap dosent work add a heat shield, if that dosent work try the q.....a simple heat shield alone would most definately work....

If I were you I would return or sell the MM and buy the Q. I am not sure about performance, but I would bet it is with in a 1/2 MPH either way, and the build quality is much better. I run a PD with hydraulic reverse and a Q and it is a solid muffler. It has the same profile as the stock. The MM is not worth all of the effort you are going through. Good luck

He already has the mm and its on the boat....it would be very simple to cut and bolt on a heat shield.....my mm and every one that I have seen are well built solid exhaust systems.......but if you want the performance of a gutted stock then go the cheap we way and gut a stock......

Have you greased the shit out of the reverse disk? It doesnt take much to bind the reverse. I run the dog shit out of mine and the only time I had a problem was when I realized the 2 pumps of grease wasn't enough if you use it like I do...

Take the pin out that holds the reverse ram to the small gear (note the bushing set up, how many on top and bottom) so the bottom can rotate freely and grease it until you get good clean grease coming out while moving it back and forth.

I do agree heat will affect it but I think if you do the above and make sure you've got a big enough dent in the MM to clear the ram and elbow fitting it will work fine.

Ive been tossing the idea around for a heat shield and cant figure out a good way to do it with the ram coming so close to the muffler when I go in reverse could anyone post some pics to give me a better idea?

I looked into the MM exhaust because a lot of people really like them, but I decided I was trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Yeah I could cut the corners off the square and make it work, but why? There are other options that don't have these issues. I am sure the MM is a great muffler, it is just not designed for the PD with Hydraulic reverse.

Yep I had same problem I put two heat sheilds u can get them from welding supply store there made to cover ur hand while welding and there backed with leather they worked fine just tie wrdp them on but I got tired of it so I went to gutted stock exhaust and didn't loose any power if I bought another exhaust I would buy q series

I've never had a problem with it, a big hammer when I first put the exhaust on to clear everything and it glows red at night but the reverse still works with no problem.

How much of a dent are we talking that it takes in the mm for the ram to clear the muffler?

Anybody have pics they can post?

I've had my MM on my PD for two an a half years and never had the first issue with my reverse not working. I do have the big dent on my MM also an it never messed with the reverse

Here comes some pictures, the dents not that big...these are in forward

Half way in reverse...it's not touching but close

Post subject:  Re: MM affecting PD Reverse?

In forward, plenty of air space between can and ram. When you tighten down the MM, make sure its as far away as possible.
